When I had VGN Z690, i did not have problem with cpu whining.
when i open the ram cover, I can see that the cpu is sitting right next to it.
audible electrical noise such as "buzzing and whining" noise is coming out of this new arrandale cpu.
Any suggestion to reduce/fix this?

Sounds like an abnormal hardware issue... I would take it to a Sony store and show it to a rep, I wouldn't touch it...

Is this a continuous whining sound or only when the cpu is idle?
The reason I'm asking is because I when I bought the 1st gen Macbook Pro it made a buzzing/whining sound but only when the cpu was idle.
There were self made programs to stop the cpu from going to idle and Apple eventually offered to replace motherboards free of charge on affected laptops.
Maybe that's what's happening here. -
I can't send this in for repair because that is all I have been doing in the last year.and it is only a week old.
moreover, this unit can't be refunded for some reason.
I guess i will be sending this unit for repair before the warranty expires... by then, I am using an ear plug haha... -
There is similar problems (CPU whine) reported on other units with the same CPU eg. Lenovo T410s.

I contacted sony and it seems that they will be replacing the mainboard.
I will ask the onsite warranty service technician to just bring the new mainboard and replace it by myself with his presence. I find them having no skill at all in taking apart compact laptop like vaio z because the tech guy broke laptop which ended in exchange of the laptop. -
I hear a little bit of a high pitched noise but it just sounds like the fan. I can only hear it when the room is dead silent or my face is very close to the computer. -
-
I can confirm I have this sound on my i7.
I just thought it was normal from the fan at low RPMS, so you are saying this problem is warrantyable?
Maybe I should go to the sony store and put my ear up to their Zs.
I only notice this in a silent room, which none of mine ever are.
Thanks.
ALSO I put the link to the file up @ http://www.megaupload.com/?d=JQW9MQ3Y -
I am not talking about the ambient fan sound, but it is rather the intermittent buzzing or high pitched noise.
I can assure u that this is covered under warranty. I had a VGN Z690 that experienced the whining / buzzing noise and SONY somehow fixed it.
Now, I hope that I will be contacted by an on-site warranty personal and get lucky with the new mobo that the guy will bring; I wrote that I will try to replace it on my own.
It actually exists in every laptop due to the power saving feature and some are audible and some are not.
I don't think it is serious but I'd rather not have a laptop with the noise. But i can't hear it as long as i am away from the laptop and the room is not dead silent. -
Mine isn't intermittant but 24/7 , mine makes the hum yours does but its hardly audible.
-
I just listened to your clip on my headphones and it appears that you have a hum by default but it gets louder intermittantly. Mine is just the low hum it doesn't get louder like yours.
So is mine normal? -
mine has something other than the humming.
humming is normal. but the mine's something else.... -

I just noticed something: I've been using my laptop without my battery for a couple of days, and just heard a slight buzzing sound. It's similar to my first generation MBP's buzzing, which was attributed to the CPU and much more irritating.
Anyway, I put my battery back on and the buzzing went away. So that got me thinking: there must be some capacitative / resistive property the battery has, so perhaps if the current battery doesn't help, another battery with slightly different capacitative / resistive properties can eliminate the buzz? To test, maybe the Sony store will allow you to use their display model's battery... -

should I just order another Z11 with another 192gb.
and built one with 64x4 in raid0 and sell this one on ebay? -

Does the buzzing also disappear when the battery is installed and fully charged? -

I had the SAME EXACT problem, I even opened my brand new Vaio E, & traced the high pitched random noise from center, not the HDD, or the FAN.
before opening the laptop, I thought the sound is coming from the FAN, but it is not. BTW, When I started in Safe Mode, the noise goes away.
I was playing around in the BIOS, & I just disabled the 'CPU C3 C6 Support' and Voila the random high pitched sound is Gone!!!
this indeed related to the idle states new feature for the cpu cores. -
The other thing that will "go away" when you disable c-states is your battery life...

I've got a VGN-Z that as a sound issue from the fan, but first commenting on the megaupload sound file.
That sounds an awful lot like a motor, as if the fan blades are touching some wires close by while spinning. So this sound is ALWAYS there whenever the fan is in an idle state?
My VGN-Z (with a Centrino 2 Duo) makes a high pitched whine, but only when the fan decides to speed up from a stopped state to a moving state (no sound when already moving and changing speeds).

I too would be extremely happy if it is confirmed that UNUSUAL fan sounds are fixable under warranty.
