    Hi2all,

I searched (Scout's honor!) but couldn't find one single thread on Sony's first Netbook... :-?

I came across it by surprise in an electronics mega-store yesterday so I thought I'd research it on the 'Net but I can't say I've found very much user feedback on it...

Here's one review from Techradar and a couple of more from Cnet etc. but no hardcore reviews to been seen yet. (at least none that I could find)... .

anyone here own one? Like most Sonys, it's stunning to look at, has a higher-res (1366x768) screen, but alas, a very low-rated battery-charge life (2.5hrs... ) and otherwise, no added features (unless you consider a memroy stick reader as a value-added feature, of course ;) and sports only two USB ports. No HDMI either. Otherwise, same-ol-same-ol N280 / GMA950 / 1GB / 160GB configuration as most current-day Netbooks... .

The US model is VPC-W111XX (XU) and the EU model is W11S1E. "Retail" pricing in my neck of the woods (Austria) is €450.

Sorry if I missed existing threads (if so, please point me in the right direction, thanks)!

    Hi,

Saw a VPC-W111XX/W (white) yesterday and I do have the same question. I'm also surprised for the lack of threads here. This was the only one I've found :p

Anyway, the only nice feature I notice in this netbook is the HD screen resolution (1366x768). Most netooks still coming with 1024x600.

Any user feedback on this model(s)?

EDIT: is it possible upgrade the RAM to 2GB?

    Regards.

    Hi again,

I inquired an eBay seller about the memory upgrade. He answered me the following:

I think the hi resolution screen, combined with the 2gb RAM, will be a nice combination to run Windows 7 (of course, if this Windows version is fast and light as people claims).

Probably, in a short time, 1366x768 will be common in 10" netbooks (I think). For now, the Vaio is the only one I've found (at least in NewEgg).

    Regards.

Yes, vaio is the only one, keeping him above everybody else, since this market is so filled with all kinda products, sony needed to put somethink better on it.

I believe there is windows XP installed on it, so no worry about its speed.

HP sells 10 in netbooks with a 1366x768" res.

Sony should have offered a 6 cell battery as standard with this model.
If you don't need good battery life then this is a decent option to go for.
I don't know if the promised 6 cell battery has materialised yet.

    Hi,
My company has been evaluating several systems to replace the TT's that we have been buying.

Sony let us borrow a w for a few days, a few observations from people that tried it.

    1. Screen- best thing about the unit. Very bright and sharp and the resolution is a big plus

    2. Keyboard, very small and hard to type on. Very short travel too. Nobody here liked it

    3. Trackpad.- also very good with good sensitivity and buttons

    4. Battery life- the deal breaker, we got just over two hours doing normal office apps over wi-fi

    5. Too expensive- for what you get, lots of other options

edit: also. the RAM may be upgradeable but it's not easily accessible if it is. We tried everything short of completely disassembling it and the only access we got was to the hard drive

Well, awesome screen *and* a very nice aluminum case, not to mention a few hundred grams lighter than say, Acer's D250 or Asus 1005HA... . although I'd be the first to complement Asus on their "seashell" 1008HA design, it's still not on par with Sony's higher-end cases (TZ, SZ & now this Netbook of theirs).

Agreed. Even if they were to offer it with a six-cell, the keyboard's nothing short of a nightmare... The right-shift key's smaller than my little finger, lol... (or rather, sigh...).

Just bought one of these today (Argos in the UK have these on sale for £350, with a free Vaio 7in Wireless photoframe worth ~£120).

I read these reviews, and was undecided, but had a play in the store, and the few comments in this thread really do the unit injustice.. It's a fantastic netbook. It's as usuable as my HP2133 for typing on, but much more powerful (HP2133 is upfor sale if anyone wants one...)

Dell also offers 10 in netbooks with a 1366x768 res.
With netbooks a lot of people want very good battery life and that is not something that the W11 can produce. So if you don't need very good battery life it could be an option for you and i mentioned this before. It is selling though at a more reasonable price now though compared to what was when it was launched. The new models that come with W7 will probably though be sold at those original prices.

Also, i think Sony could have improved on a few things from a design perspective. The keyboard could have been larger. There are several 10.1 netbooks that also have larger keyboards.

I agree with a lot of what was written here.

I see that Sony has started to sell these netbooks the next refresh with a 6 cell battery as standard.
    http://www.sony.co.uk/product/vn-w-series/vpcw12s1e-p
This makes this netbook more of an attractive proposition.
I think it was a good move by Sony and something that they really should have done from the start.

Looking at the specs of the refresh, theyare identical to the W11S1, aside from the 6cell battery and Windows7. This is a good upgrade path if you picked up a W11S1 cheap like myself (I managed to bag some cheap Win7 licences on the pre-order promo). Win7 (and Vista) power management is far superior to that of XP, so just an upgrade alone without the extended battery is beneficial...
