Hi all, I've just experienced this recently when I was doing some light tasks (MS word, web browsing, youtube @480p) on my Z. I'm using my Z on stamina mode, and in power saver mode.

There is basically no heat coming out from the vents, but the bottom part of my Z (just under the VAIO logo) gets very hot, I'd say somewhere between 40-50 degrees celcius.

However, when doing some online gaming on "speed" mode, the machine is noticably hotter as you'd expect, but the bottom part of the screen is miraculously cool (still a bit warmer than usual) compared to the vents.

Do any of you VPC-Z users experience this problem?

Run Task Manager to see if any process is hogging the CPU. Run GPU-Z and keep an eye on the GPU usage and temperature. Also check HDD usage - maybe the antivirus is doing a complete scan behind your back.

Mine is not really warm there. My guess is you got an model with GPS/WWAN? I heard the antenna's and all run through the display.

No. Only the VPCZ137GG in South east asia offers WAN/GPS. I have the VPCZ138GG. Still can't understand why the display heats up though (it heats up almost exclusively on the display when not gaming).

The bottom of the display gets hot when brightness is turned up because the led's are there.

    Oh that's why :D

That's one of the better explanations because I usually game when the brightness is up at 4 notches, so I don't kill the battery (I usually game on battery). I do word processing and other stuff on AC though, so I do get to max out the brightness. Still though, the heat horrifies me as I haven't seen a display lid heat up like this. Thanks beaups!

now that you mentioned it, i touched my screen and like brian said, its warmer there, but i thought it was because of the battery emitting heat

but still, even though it's warmer in that area than the rest of the lid, i do not find it uncomfortable or alarming

That was my first thought too but then I knew it couldn't be the battery because after I shut down my machine the battery is cool while the screen is hot

It isn't much of a hindrance during normal use since I wouldn't be touching the back of the screen when working, but it does get annoying to grip on a hot notebook when I want to transport it occasionally.

Lol... Yeah i was scrolling down this thread to see if anyone would finally say this :).

But yeah, just the LEDs. You're fine :)

I skype all the time, so the top of the screen gets hot after a while right behind the web cam
