So I have a VPC-Z1, that has a issue with overheating.
Actually what happens is, the fan starts spinning at a very high RPM, and shuts-down a few seconds later.
The air that comes out of the fan isn't that warm (just normal), HWmonitor shows me it isn't overheating.
When it starts I'm not doing labour intensive work, and it will happen randomly (happened twice over a month).
I keep the notebook clean and blow the fan dust free every two months or so (so I'm sure there's no dust build up), I even opened it up for inspection but it was clean as can be.

When instantly reboot when it happens, it shuts-down before showing me the login screen.
So I disconnect it from power, let it sit for a minute and reboot everything is fine then.

I'm thinking the issue is with a temperature sensor within the cpu, (thinking it's overheating, fan comes on, can't cool it, and reaches the temperature the CPU is set at to prevent damage and it shuts it self down).

Could this be a firmware or BIOS problem (software), or is it really only hardware, or something completely else?

Hi bart, sorry for hijacking your post, but I wanted to contact you, did you eventually change and fit the sz screen into a sr? I'm on the same boat and would like go know :)

About your problem, if there is no heating at all but the computer detects overheat, it's gotta be a BIOS problem, is it happening out of the box? Or after installing updating something? Try a different bios firmware first.

There is very low chance that your bios is responsible for your overheating issue. VPC-Z has a rather flexible heatsink that covers both CPU and GPU and many have reported same overheating due to the heatsink lifted off one of these chips. This would perfectly fit your description. Search the forum, I remember there are already threads showing how to fix that.

Have there been any drops or impacts? Try stamina/speed mode to check whether it's the GPU or not. Have you checked that the heatsink for correct placement and contact?
