I am trying to help my daughter in college troubleshoot her VAIO, which now is saying "no audio output device" and doesn't play through speakers or headphones.
A couple weeks back, the CPU fan broke, and the computer started shutting down for thermal reasons. Other than the overheating, it had full functionality.
She paid someone to repair the computer, and upon the return, the wireless and the audio didn't work. She fixed the wireless herself (not sure why/how the configuration for her wireless access would go away because the laptop had been opened and a new fan installed, but I mention this because maybe it offers a clue to the real problem).
My first sense was that "something" (sorry, I'm pretty hardware-ignorant) got unplugged during the repair, and that was the problem. But I'm told that the VAIOs and most laptops don't have a separate sound card; it's on the MB. So much for that theory.
I have told my daughter to "uninstall" the sound hardware via Device Manager, then reboot and let the computer "find" the hardware and drivers. I am not 100% sure she has done this right, but still no audio.
Any ideas what's going on? She's not assertive enough to talk to the repair person and tell him "it was working when you took it and now it isn't."
I just don't know how audio (and wireless) can be working right, then not be working after a simple disassembly and fan replacement.
Again, wireless is fixed, but grasping for ideas about fixing the audio, and my hands are tied a bit because I'm not close enough to use the laptop myself.

Ok, the CW290FX has an i-series CPU and the NVIDIA G310m. Audio is Realtek ALC262, and the NVIDIA HDMI audio out.
Are there any unknown devices in the Device Manager? Hit the Windows Key + R and type devmgmt.msc and press enter. If you don't see any audio devices listed, and no unknown devices, something may be wrong with the hardware. If they're are unknown devices, try installing the Realtek drivers from the link below. If you see a Realtek audio device showing up, make sure it's enabled. It will have a tiny down arrow next to the icon if it's disabled or a tiny exclamation point if it's having issues.
