I own a Sony Vaio VPCEA1S1E that is around 4 years old, though the fan was replaced just a few months ago. It was working just fine until yesterday (no crashes) it started turning itself off whenever I turned it on for a few seconds. I waited overnight because I suspected it might be an overheating problem, so I just turned it on now and downloaded Speedfan to check the temperature. And as it turns out, it crashes whenever the temperature gets to 60 degrees celsius. What should I do? I don't think laptops are supposed to turn off at just 60 degrees..

How quickly does the temperature rise? There is a significant lag between what Speedfan reports and what the actual temperatures are (note that there are several sensors involved, and Speedfan doesn't see them all).

Is the fan running well? Is it putting out a decent blast of hot air from the vent? You should be able to feel it from 4 inches away, at least.

Was the replacement fan an original Sony part? Might be worth opening it up again and lubricating the fan shaft with grease.

Actually, I can barely hear the fan. What should I do?

Dunno, besides the suggestion to open, clean and lubricate the fan shaft. Once you get it open - it is a lot of work; look for the disassembly guide for your model - the fan rotor pulls straight out. Handle carefully - the plastic blades are brittle and break fairly easily. The symptoms you describe in the OP are what one would expect if the fan has jammed solid and is not rotating at all.

This might be a Windows update thing. I'm having a similar problem in that my fan has suddenly decided not to speed up. It is rotating at the same slow speed regardless of the temperature and which power profile is selected. If I stress the system, it overheats and shuts off (at about 90 degrees C), but the fan never speeds up. It does change speed for a few seconds while booting, though, so the fan itself seems to be working, but the embedded controller seems to have lost communication with the rest of the system.
