It was a long time ago but, I think this only started happening after a fairly haphazard clean install I was forced to do recently thanks to a failed(ing) HDD. Anyway, after the install I just assumed it was the charger, since it was very obviously failing too. I tested another but, I assumed it was failing too since it was just as old and used just as much for years. Now, I have a new charger, and it's very obviously not the charger. It's either the hardware, or software. Is there any way to tell which one it is before going through all of that trouble?

I went into the BIOS and let it do nothing for a while. It still gets unreasonably hot but not scalding.
I turned the laptop off and let it charge, it got warm at worst.
When running on the desktop it's still warm but, when doing anything intensive, playing videos, games, it ramps up to scalding straight away.

Though, all of this doesn't mean much to me.
