    Hello everyone,

I bought a VPCSA with a single 120GB SSD thinking I could upgrade later on but I was completely taken by surprise when I checked the bay to see 1) it was a 1.8" drive (didn't do enough research before ordering) and 2) the cable was single-ended.

So it looks like I need to find a decent 1.8" drive and a replacement cable.

I did quite a bit of research but never found the answer.

The closest I found was this thread which was very useful though I'm not sure the part number listed is the right one for my model.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/sony/511578-how-replace-ssd-vaio-vpcz11-vpcz12-non-sony-ssd.html

I also ran a check on the Sony serviceplus website for the VPCSA part numbers and didn't find anything similar either. But I did find this by using only VPCS :

VPCSB FPC SSD SATA x 2
    https://www.servicesplus.sel.sony.com/sony-part-number-A1820060A.aspx

Can anyone confirm that this is the part I need? Because I'd rather avoid ordering a 70$ cable only to find out it's not the right one.

As for the drive, it seems the crucial are popular but they are hard to find, the only 1.8" microSATA drives I seem to find are the kingston ones :(

Anyway, hopefully someone will be able to answer to my questions.

    Hello Kerdal.

I have the same model and "issue" as you are.

If you already bought the cable please confirm that this is the correct part
if not, I did small research and found
    part number A1816283A
    A1816283A V030 FPC SSD 2CON X2 ?

At least it mentioned 2 con (2 connectors perhaps ?) but didn't mentioned sata.

    Your part
    A1820060A V030 FPC SSD SATA X2

Mentioned sata and have this cryptic X2 which should symbolize 2 connectors (may be ?)

So again if you knew which part is correct please let me know.

For SSD update I am planning to use Intel SSD 320 Series 160GB.

    Regards KPSLO

Unfortunately, I don't have any new information to report. With the complete lack of data available I preferred to wait.

As for the part number you found, without proper documentation, we can't tell which one is the right one.

Can you check what your cable says? Mine has the following information on it:
    V030_MP_SSD_1CH1CONN_FPC_240
    2layer rev 1.1
    024_0001_8530_A

Which leads me to believe your part number might be better. Hell, it could be a combination of both (one for the orange cable, 1 for the connectors...)

In the meantime, I found a workaround for the space issue.

My main problem was with steam and some other large softwares so I used an external USB3 1TB hdd (one of those small western digital ones that doesn't require an external power supply, actually bought more than one because I found them at a good discount) and using a few symbolic links, I offloaded the less useful content to the external harddrive but I kept the bare minimum so I can still have access to the critical stuff, otherwise I just plug in the external hdd and it's completly transparent. Sure, it's not as fast as a SSD but it gets the job done at a fraction of the cost. ($80 external 1TB HDD vs $70 for the cable, 200-300 for a 128GB drive, shipping, duties, etc.)

At least the laptop is great (except the 2 buttons on the touchpad, they creak a bit when I try click on them) and the latest bios really helped the noise issue.

I'll keep checking this thread once in a while, hopefully others will find the information.

    Good luck.

    Hello,

I bought one of these model series for a customer last week with a view to changing the drive for a 2.5" 500GB hybrid disk from Seagate.
As per your problem, it comes with a special double sided bracket for 2x 1.8" SSD modules with one mSATA connector!

Initially I was going to order the standard SATA cable and 2.5" drive left and right brackets, but my spares supplier said they couldn't order any as Sony were stating none available and none to order. I went to Sony (thanks to Kerdal for that site, even though there were none available!) and when trying to confirm the part details they just replied stating I needed to look at their accessories site for laptop parts (batteries and power supplies...yeh thanks).

The Toshiba drive in the machine is a Micro SATA module, it's just a circuit board!
512 256 128 64 GB SSD | Solid State Drives | SSD Hard Drive - Toshiba Electronic Components
It seems very difficult to obtain a 256GB from Toshiba's range, the resellers seem to only sell in large quantities.

I could only find a 256GB SSD from Kingston in 1.8" form (circa $800), until I looked at the Intel SSD 320, thanks to KPSLO, and discovered they make a 300GB 1.8" mSATA drive for about $600.
Although the Intel SSD does come in a casing, I found a detailed tech document which shows the exact physical dimensions and I worked out that I should be able to extract the SSD board from the casing (fingers crossed) and it will fit in-place of the Toshiba.

You may be wondering why I didn't just buy one of these machines with the correct drive in it in the first place. The main reason was availability. It seems that here in the UK the lead time for a custom built machine is 4-5 weeks, and the customer wants it sooner, plus of course you get near christmas and it could be delayed even more!

I didn't even give it a second thought it would be 1.8" and would be mSATA. Should know better really, but, you live and learn.

I will post back with how I get on when I receive the drive next week if either of you are interested?

    cheers,
    Richard.

    Richard,

Could you post the part numbers for the Sata ribbon and the left and right brackets. Even if those parts are not available now they will eventually and I could really use them then.

    Thanks!!

    Hi Josh,

I can't say for certain but I believe they are the following:

    VPCSB19FJ 427875801 V030 BRACKET HDD R
    VPCSB19FJ 427875901 V030 BRACKET HDD L
    VPCSB19FJ A1816281A V030 PWA FPC HDD

The brackets are pretty much a dead cert but the PWA FPC is possibly a circuit board and not a ribbon cable. Hope this is of some help.

    cheers,
    Richard.

    Hello Richard,

Thanks for the info, at least if I decide to switch to a single 2.5" drive, I know the bracket part numbers. I'm not 100% sure about that cable though, it's possible it's only the power cable (or it could be both data+power). At this point, we don't have any information about these parts so it's pure speculation.

    Regards,
    K.

    Hello Kerdal.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------
Single port FPC connector in my laptop

    http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/5293/01fpcconnector.jpg[IMG]

Intel 320 series 160 Gb in bracket . Intel SSD size is bigger than Toshiba
so one hinge in a bracket must be bend to allow Intel fit in,
also you can use only one screw to secure Intel SSD, so I put padding around to prevent
circuit board from sliding and possibly shot circuiting because it sits on metal bracket.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------

Installing caddy I increased available real estate but lost DVD.
That of course is not good but at least I can use external DVD or Blue-Ray.

Both SSD recognized in system as 3Gb SATA so both are fast. Intel raid util even offered me to create a Raid 0 from these two drives :).

I still looking to get dual channel cable and have Raid 0 made from two Intel SSD
with Toshiba for data/music/movie storage and I think that
A1816283A V030 FPC SSD 2CON X2 would be a correct part number but not sure.

    KPSLO,

Thanks for the update and pictures. Sorry for not posting back earlier, have been very busy.

I managed to fit an Intel 320 Series 300GB SSD onto the bracket, and managed to fix both screws ok. I had to bend the small lugs so they didn't short out on the board, as you say. It doesn't seem to emit any noticable heat and works a dream.

    cheers,
    Richard.

I need to upgrade to a bigger SSD and therfor I also need the cable with the standard sata connection and not the microsata connection.

What I understand that makes it possible to use a standard 2,5'' SSD instead of the Toshiba micros sATA Module.

From where is it possible to get?

    Best regards

    Hello,

I wanted to answer in case someone is still following this discussion as I found it very helpfull.

Thanks to a previous message in this post, I've ordered and installed spare parts :
    VPCSB19FJ 427875801 V030 BRACKET HDD R
    VPCSB19FJ 427875901 V030 BRACKET HDD L
    VPCSB19FJ A1816281A V030 PWA FPC HDD

on my Vaio VPCSA3N9E bought with Toshiba micro Sata module card 128Go SSD.

This in order to upgrade to a bigger SSD and with a standard 2.5 format less expensive. I just made tests with a Intel 510 SSD 120Go and it worked well. I've ordered an M4 Crucial SSD of 256 Go to complete the operation.

I ordered the Vaio spare parts on Estock.fr the 14th July for around 90 euros and I'have received it around end July. Very serious an reliable site.

    Rgds,
    Stephen

Can anyone please confirm for me that the following part number is going to work with the Sony VPCSA2GGX Laptop? A1816281A - V030 PWA FPC HDD. I am scared that it is the same one that came with the laptop that works with the dual SSD Toshiba Drives which are configured RAID 0. I also need the SATA Ribbon Cable which will work with the OCZ Vector 4 SSD Drive. The connector on my laptop mother board is shown in the attached picture. Hi Ric,

I believe this is what you are looking for. Please double check as I had to RMA two orders before I received the correct cable. And now that I have the correct cable my stupid BIOS won't recognize the drive.

No. The cable I need seems to be V0B0 FPC SSD SATA X1 (S) -- A1854739A. It is just pain to find. They have them in US but the postage to the UK is ridiculous. I have ordered it through some dutch website, I hope it will be the one. This part number came directly from Sony support for VPCSE. It is was a really painful experience, for some reason, they dont want to give you the part number straight away but tell u some rubbish like we dont know, there isnt any etc etc

I will update this once I get the cable..it is due to be delivered middle March though (!)

Thank you for your reply Kmd606,

I need some clarifications, the cable in that picture is the cable that came with your vaio for the dual 128 1.8" sdd toshiba drive, right?

If so this connects the two ssd drives trought a micro Sata, so this cable should be either one of these two V030 FPC SSD SATA X2 totally compatibles by sony info
    A-1820-060-A V030 FPC SSD SATA X2
    A-1827-752-A V030 FPC SSD SATA X2

I´m looking for one of these to upgrade to two ssd 1.8 drives, are you selling that cable?

How can I sent you a PM in order to talk.

    Hi! guys
my vps SA2gg SSD 2x dual is getting an error on one of the ssd. I have tried unplug and plug it back but for some reason one of the SSD keep getting raid error. Is the part above is the right parts
    VPCSB19FJ 427875801 V030 BRACKET HDD R
    VPCSB19FJ 427875901 V030 BRACKET HDD L
    VPCSB19FJ A1816281A V030 PWA FPC HDD
If it does, I am planning to switch to 1 SSD instead of 2x which is the pain in the just to have it error every now and then.

    My vpcsa26gg has the RAID0 ssd 256 GB (2x128).

Please advice on this one. Thank in advance
