I am using VPCZ with K-Lite Codec Pack Standard 6.4.0 installed on my windows 7 64 bit. My drivers are all standard sony drivers. After I installed K-Lite, my computer crash when playing video and I have to do a hard power down (push and hold the power button). I don't know if it is all video or only some format, but all my videos make windows crash. I tried using Windows Media Player, but the result is the same. I tried updating to K-Lite 6.4.4, but my computer still crashes.
I want to ask whether my computer have a hardware problem or K-Lite is not compatible with my computer hardware? Btw, I tried reinstalling windows.
Thanks. Sorry for my bad english.

That's why you never, NEVER use K-Lite. That's bloatware which simply installs literally ALL the codecs available / you could find. So you can understand that some codecs that K-Lite comes with can conflict with each other, causing random bork-ups.
Reinstall Windows again and DON'T install K-Lite. And search google for CCCP (Combined Community Codec Package). Install that and all your problems SHOULD be solved. Oh yes; make sure you're in SPEED mode when installing CCCP, just to make sure. -
JUST a note:
MPC-HC, alone, can punch through almost anything. (no external codecs, no changed system configs, nothing).
Windows Media Player with Haali media splitter can also punch through almost anything. WMF is a lot better than it used to be, and it shows (litterally).

Thanks to 5ushiMonster, I caught one of his posts previously regarding CCCP. I installed that instead of the usual K-lite codec packs on my Vaio X, and it's awesome. Light, less garbage, and absolutely no issues playing anything.

Thanks fo the info guys. I tried CCCP, but i still have the same crash. I think the problem is with MKV file. I tried MP4 file with x264 video and it plays without problem using MPC-Home Cinema and WMP. When I play MKV file with x264 video, my computer crash.

.mkv files are containers that have a video file and an audio file inside (think a .zip file that's playable in WMP).
Try playing that problematic .mkv file on another machine. I've never heard of CCCP (or a .mkv file as a matter of fact) throwing up a BSOD on a machine unless the .mkv container its trying to open and play harboured a virus.
Don't bother virus scanning the .mkv file as most scanners will skip over the file without looking into the actual container.
And try playing another .mkv file? Cause it sounds like that single .mkv file is causing you grief, rather than the .mkv format itself.
I re-read the first post, but just incase.
If you have just UNINSTALLED K-Lite and then installed CCCP, you'll have to re-install the OS. K-lite, when uninstalled, leaves behind crapware which conflicts with CCCP installation files. You could try INSURGENT (a CCCP tool), which detects if any other conflicting codec pack is installed on the machine.
And @Tolwyn21.
Glad to be of help. Though you might have lagging issues playing 1080p files on the X, unless you have the newer generation ATOM processors (which still may lag to a certain extent...) -
I tried playing another .mkv file with x264 video and got the same results. The .mkv files I played are Top Gear Season 15 in 720p. I don't get BSOD instantly. My computer just stop and I can't do a thing. The screen doesn't change at all. I have to hard power down my computer, and when I start my computer again, I choose to start windows normally and I got BSOD there. After that, I start my computer again, and start windows normally and windows start normally.
I tried playing those files in my other computer and they play normally. The problem is my other computer is a bit old and doesn't have a discrete graphic card. It can't use hardware acceleration for x264 video.
I'm still confused about my VPCZ since it can play MP4 file with x264 video with and without hardware acceleration. I tried all 6 episode of top gear season 15 and a couple more MKV file and the result is the same.
Can someone with VPCZ try playing any episode of top gear season 15 (MKV format with x264 video in 720p) with CCCP 2010-10-10 installed and share the result?
Thanks. -
Thanks for all your reply, and specially to jeremyshaw. I tried uninstalling all codec and the MKV file plays without any problem using only Media Player Classic - Home Cinema.
