In the past weeks I got an annoying vertical line on my screen. Sometimes there are more, but the one, exactly in the middle is a sticky one. It does apper both with the integrated and the dedicated graphic cards and with different OS version as well, so must be a HW issue.

Did anybody encounter a similar problem? If so, what was your solution?

Unfortunately it is out of warranty.

Sometimes it helps if I change the resolution or switch between the graphic cards, but not always. It apperas when I open up the notebook.

sometimes we need to see the problem to give an answer about it.

    Where is a photo?

Also you can try to do a print screen to insure that it is really hardware problem/

As you don't have warranty... I would check connectors of LCD. If there is any flex cable then you should use alcohol to clean contacts on flex cable. if not then... sorry

I am actually more intrested if someone had this issue with this specific model before, maybe there is a DIY solution (even if it means that I have to replace the LCD panel myself).

I would rather not go into the device ased on guesses, I do not want to risk rendering it completely unusable.

On an iPad so have to keep this short...

    I have a Z12 from 2010 with the 1920x1080 screen, 330m, etc

Over the past year or so I've had this exact problem too... It would come and go, sometimes disappearing for a month or two... it used to be a line of light blue or teal that was stuck, however, recently it's a single line that is white on a black background and black on a white one... Almost like that single line of pixels is inverted...

I opened it up and reconnected the cable, however, the problem persisted until it disappeared for no reason one day when I turned the machine on...

I've been searching for a replacement machine as its downright embarrassing showing documents or images to a client on the screen as it is, however, I want a 13 or 15 in laptop with a screen of equal quality, discrete graphics, premium feel... It's tough to find one... I wish the new Z had discrete...I'd buy it in a heartbeat...A rMBP is nice other than that I don't want to deal with OSX, and buying it to use only for windows is kinda a waste

Anyways, sorry to get off track, however, yes, similar model and the same issue... No fix yet, however, I'm still hoping I can figure out what it is (panel or bad connector)

So it looks just like mine, exact notebook, exact screen. I will let sony give me a quote on the repair, maybe they are kind enough to tell me what is wrong with it.

It is annoying, if 900 out of more than a million pixels suddenly decide not to function.

Thanks, I'll be looking forward to hearing what you learn regarding this problem. If it's fairly cheap to replace the screen I may go that route as I still love the rest of the machine...otherwise the quest for a replacement continues. With my iPad and M18x I don't use the Z12 as much as I used to... I might just wait for the next refresh next year and see what shows up :)

People have replaced their screens on the Z1. Plenty of threads, mostly those who wanted to put in a 1080p screen, but a few who wanted to go the other way as well. Those threads were quite detailed. Search for them and you should have little problem replacing the screen. It is probably just the display controller or RAM (inside the LCD panel itself), but I doubt you'll be able to do anything about it, so replacing the entire panel is what you need to do.

Find ComputerCowboy's web page (it is linked in his signature) and get the Z1 service manual, so you know what to do and where everything goes.

So, I decided to take my Z1 apart more fully than I previously had when I checked the monitor cable to see if there was any hope at repairing the panel (in addition to figuring out how difficult it would be if I did replace it with a new panel.

I found that pressure at the point of the vertical line resulted in the line vanishing. I'm not certain the cause of this though I figure it's probably a bad solder joint between the data ribbon and the screen.

I obviously lack the equipment to make sure an intricate repair so instead I took two pieces of electrical tape (the thick kind) and placed them over the trouble spot, figuring the bezel would deliver enough pressure once reassembled to prevent the line from returning.

I have no clue how long this will work, however, hopefully long enough for the ASUS U500 to come out :p

I uploaded a video (kinda rambly but it gets the point across) of my findings at Vaio Z1 Vertical Line On Screen - Potential Fix? - YouTube
