Sony posted BIOS updates for many models to enable VT. Some showed up in US site, like FW590, but others are listed in oversea.

Like the FW290J that I have, can use R1100Y0 BIOS update. Basically look for last 2 characters of your current BIOS version then see what's available.

Here is a link from oversea:

As I've done almost on a daily basis lately, I just checked their drivers section for my VGN-FW290. As of this post, the BIOS update isn't listing under the Win7 sections, but it IS listed when selecting the various flavors of Vista:

    http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=VGNFW290&SelectOS=34

" This utility updates the BIOS to version R1100Y0 to add support for the Intel® Virtualization Technology on models with the required hardware and provides the ability to enable or disable this feature within the BIOS settings"

    Date: 10/28/2009
    Size: 1.74mb

Since it's not under the Win7 listings (yet), I'll presume it might not work under the new OS -- something current Win7 users might want to consider. I'm swapping in a previous hard drive with Vista64 on it before updating the BIOS...

Just a reminder for folks who don't go into the VAIO BIOS often: Tapping F2 before OS bootup enters the BIOS.

The Aptio Setup Utility (v1.23.1109) shows my original BIOS version as R1091Y0 (I bought this January 2009)

I swapped in my original drive with Vista64 on it before progressing. After booting up and going to the VAIO drivers site, the aforementioned program was downloaded and launched.

The cooling fan kicked in, mouse cursor was locked out with a churning pointer, and it took several minutes til the process finished. A mouseclick powered the system down.

Upon rebooting and going into the BIOS, the version is now at R1100Y0. Arrowing over to the ADVANCED tab, there's now a listing to enable Virtualization Technology. :D :D :D

I popped the 500gig Seagate with Win7 RC back in, booted up and it's so far, so good as I'm typing this.

okay, so i installed my version R3110Y0 from the site listed above, and avira kept detecting it to be malware
Virus or unwanted program 'TR/ATRAPS.Gen2 [trojan]'
    detected in file 'C:\Users\Heath\AppData\Local\Temp\{DE4B89B5-B917-410E-A631-D213198726BB}\AFUWIN.exe.
    Action performed: Allow access
any idea why it did that? i hit allow, cause i figured it was a sony site, so it should be legit, and it worked, in the bios i'm able to turn on VT.
so idk, i guess it works, but watch there be a keylogger or something on my pc now. lol.
