If you're curious here's the battery performance on a new Vaio A series:

    Hardware configuration
    - Vaio A270 (this is the same platform as the A290 but w/o the retail bundle)
    - Pentium M 1.6
    - 1.25 Gig RAM
    - 60 Gig 7200 RPM hard drive
    - Standard battery (40 WHR)

    System status while on battery
    - CPU in battery optimization mode
    - WiFi and Bluetooth active
    - LCD brightness set at level 3 (slightly lower than ideal but still completely acceptable for use in a bright room)
    - Standard hard drive usage: spinning at all times with intermittent read/write activity
    - NO optical drive usage

    Battery performance
    - 2 hours and 15 minutes

Conclusion: This is reasonable performance given the 17" display size, but far from exceptional. My fingers are crossed that Sony will release a high capacity 80 WHR battery in the future. If so, battery life should double up to 4.5 hours.

All measurements were made with BatteryMon v1.3 (www.passmark.com).
