    Hi All,

    Help, I'm round the twist.

I purchased a new pre config'ed Sony Vaio AR51M Laptop in Jan this year. Since I got the laptop I have been receiving this most annoying buzzing sound when I have the screen on anything other than full brightness.

The buzz comes and goes Sometime I get it other times not. When the buzz starts you can sometimes stop it by moving the screen backwards and forwards.

unfortunately I didn't return the laptop to retailer when I first noticed the problem. I assumed the laptop had a fault and therefore I contacted Sony Vaio Repair Centre. They took the laptop in and replaced the fan, sent it back and still same problem. They then took it in again and this time replaced the LCD invertor. Still same problem. 3rd time in and they replaced the bottom casing, got it back and still the same problem. 4th time they took in in and said they can't find any problem. They claiming they can't replicate the problem and any noises coming from the laptop when its on anything other that full brightness is 'within their acceptance' and that the laptop should be used on full screen only!!

They are refusing to replace the laptop because they say that have to find a fault that can't be repaired before they will replace. 5 Months they have had my laptop and now they are saying I should go back to the retailer and get them to refund me under the sales of goods act 1979 (i'm in the UK btw).

I don't know what to do next?

Has anyone else got a AR series that makes this noise?

Has anyone got an AR series that doesn't make this noise?

My next step is I'm going to take it into a Sony Centre shop and see what they say about the noise and what they would do if I had bought it from them etc... Sony Repair centre say that they should then be able to ring the dealer line and report their findings to Sony's head office.

Searching this forum I see that this noise is common.

Any comments or help would be great.

    Cheers
    Al

I'm just wondering if your buzzing could be a faulty connection...
My mothers Medion laptop made a buzzing sound every now an then, Medion replaced some electrics...

Well like I said its had its fan replaced, lcd inverter and casing. From what i have read on this forum it sounds like a problem with the lcd screen and the power settings.

I'm really need to find someone who has same laptop that doesn't make the noise because then I know that mine has a problem.

    Cheers

Trying to find someone with the same problem will be difficult.
    But just to mention something:
LCD screens are silent, full stop.
So any noises are a fault.
However locating the fault - either they don't want to repair it or they can't find it...
And if it is something like the Medion, its a faulty connection.
Just wondering, if you hear the buzz, could you "shake" your screen a bit, or carefully !!! bang your hand against it?
I think that momentarily changed things on our Medion, and that was a faulty connection.
In that case I would recommend you go back and state clearlym that you seem to have a faulty electric connection in your laptop.

    Hi,

I agree with LCD screens are silent, 95% of the time this laptop is silent even when on half brightness so its definitely a problem.

When i get the buzzing if I move the screen back and forwards the noise will either stop or get worse. Sometimes I re-angle the screen and its fine but then it can come back again.

I guess it could be a loose connection although they have had it apart 4 times so I hope that they would have fixed a loose connection. Plus they have replaced the inverter.

The main problem is that I don't know if they have heard the same problem I have. My thought is that they have and when they put the screen on full brightness the noise stops and therefore they say there is no problem. I have even given them a sound recording of the problem which you can hear the noise starting and stopping but they said this was inconclusive.

The latest is that I have actually gone back to the retailer where I bought the laptop from and I have told them that Sony are unable to repair the laptop therefore I want a replacement or refund.

They have written back and said they will replacement or refund the laptop provide Sony give me confirmation that the laptop is irreparable and a caseid.

I spoken to Sony this morning and the lady was very cagey about giving me something like that, as far as Sony are concerned they can't find a fault with the laptop but she is going to speak to her head office and send me something through in the morning. Hopefully this will satisfy the retailer and I can get my money back.

I said to the woman at Sony that If I can't get my money back then I will continue to log this problem with the repair centre until something happens. Hopefully I'll just annoy them into admitting their is a problem.

    The sarga continues.

    Cheers

As long as your friendly, you can always complain when they get unfriendly ;)

Again, it definitely sounds like a loose connection to me, just like the Medion laptop.

ANd I agree, if they took it apart 4 times they should have found the fault.
All the best with your refund!!!

    Good luck!
