I'm stumped and a bit upset![]()
I just pretty much got this Sony laptop, my first Vaio ever. It is a VGNAW190B-CTO purchased 3 weeks ago. I want to import video from Sony DCR-HC42 NTSC handycam but it causes a BlueScreen of death every time right after invoking the built in Vista importer feature. Vista sees the shot from the camcorder but it crashes a second or two after it shows the preview from the camera. I've also tried to import using Premier and get the same BlueScreen crash.
Here is the error message logs from Vista, (standard x64 Home Premium standard that ships with this Vaio)

I have tried contacting Sony support a couple of times and all they have been saying is pointless stuff like, uninstalling and reinstalling the IEEE 1394 device from device manager (did not help) and rebooting in Safe Mode (did not help because in Safe Mode the PC does not even recognize the firewire attachemnt)
Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!

I have the same problem, but my machine is a FW270J.
The program to import media starts up fine but crashes when I try to import DV video from my Sony Camcorder (DCR-TVR8) via firewire. -
hey chuck good to know i'm not alone.
Do you have any other firewire devices to try with your machine?
Is your OS Vista?
Is it x64 or x32?
I only have the one camcorder and it gives me the BSOD, and I can't even try to read the error message because it goes away so fast. Let's hope we can figure this one out soon... -
I don't have any other firewire devices, just this camcorder. I'm running Vista. x64. This is the error message I get in log file.

Any luck? I reinstalled/updated drivers to no avail.
-
Hi, I found this thread after a google search and am have a similar issue. I am using the sony DCRHC52 via a I.link connection to my 64bit Vista system. The problem is when i try to import video, the computer goes to a blue screen and just shuts down.
I'm not using a laptop, but one of the vaio's "all in one" desktops. I talked to sony and they said the camcorder should have no issue working when using a firewire (I link). Yet for some reason i am unable to get it to work.
Its really annoying since there seems to be no help on this issue anywhere. -
I wonder what the deal is...if it's just drivers or what? I doubt this would work, but anyone try right clicking on the device in Device Manager and trying to update the driver from Windows Update?
-
I checked and it said my I link driver is working fine. Somehow though i wonder if its an issue with my computers I link port? I have no real way of testing it since the handycam is all i have with an i link port.
I dont know is this will help, but this is my error log.

I still have no clue either, but I just wanted to share the stop message I get in the blue screen
irql_not_less_or_equal
Looked this up on Google and it gives me a bunch of references but it seems it is due to buggy drivers. I need to recreate the BSOD screen and try to write down the dll files that are causing this message. In my case the blue screen stays on for only about 3 seconds so it is very very difficult to read all the messages. Is there any way to capture the BS page or have it not go away so fast? Any one else know what DLL files are caused by this stop message? I am thinking it is either the IEEE device or the Video card drivers... -
You should be able to turn off that auto-reboot thing. I assume it's in the same location as in XP. I much prefer having the message stay on.
It doesn't necessarily really tell you what happened though. It's just kind of that's what was being accessed when it crashed, and isn't necessarily really what's at fault (though in this case it may be).
And yeah, must be bad drivers. -
Same exact problem Chuck - same computer. Tried two different camcorders, two different cables, two different capture programs - nothing works - even tried 4 pin to 6 pin connection via smart card. After three support chats with Sony - they don't have a clue and blew me off.
Great computer - but this is a deal buster. -
That's weird...so basically they include a Firewire port that doesn't work :-/
-
http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/documentLink.do?externalId=C498492
which basically suggests doing a system restore. Worthless. -
My AW now has started to randomly stop responding and freeze up while being used to do normal tasks. I'm really frustrated with this $2000 piece of crap. I'm going to call Sony and try to get a refund, although it has been over 30 days
-
I have the same problem. My stats:
Sony Vaio VGN-FW235J
Camcorder: Panasonic PV-GS320
OS: Vista Home Premium x64
As soon as the import starts I get the blue screen of death, pretty much immediately. Very reproducible. I called Sony, and their answer was that it is most likely the camcorder is incompatible with Vista x64. I don't think it is the camcorder, but the driver. In any case they've offered to send me a copy of Vista Home Premium x32. I will try that, and see if it fixes the problem. I'll post the results here.

I installed Vista Ultimate 64 Bit on my desktop, it captures video perfectly,
with all my cameras and decks. -
SAME HERE ...BSOD after a second or two of capture
...I don't see other manufacturers having this problem, so Sony shouldn't pass the buck
Sony Vaio VGN-FW270J
Camcorder: Sony VX-2000
OS: Vista Home Premium x64 -
Same here with a canon Camcorder.

Hi
dont use fire wire it's dead and no further drivers are provided !
u don't have mini usb? -
I'm also having the problem with Vaio laptop with 64 bit Vista and using a Panasonic camcorder as well as a Sony - and using Sony Vegas to capture the video. I spend hours on the phone with tech support a couple of weeks ago and in the end the woman had me do a system restore and not allow for any Microsoft automatic updates. I couldn't hold out and I'm back to the same problem.
I bought this two thousand dollar piece of crap with an 18.4 inch screen specifically to do video. I don't care if Vista is garbage, Sony shouldn't have sold this machine with Vista 64 bit until they got the bugs out.
In any case, if anyone has a solution, please let me know. Sony/Microsoft is killing my business. -
I have FW11M with Vista Home Premium x64 clean instaled and Sony DCR-HC35 Pal camera using Sony Vegas for capture. All works like a charm.
Futhermore, I use an external hdd plugged into the laptop's firewire port and the camera plugged in hdd additional firewire socket and still no problem capturing videos from camera and watching movies from hdd in the same time. I don't know what the problem you have, mine worked fine from the first time I tryed to capture something, I can't remeber if I had the OEM instalation of Windows, or the clean x86 instalation that I had made after 2 weeks from purchasing my laptop. -
How is it that you installed the operating system on you Vaio instead of Sony?
-
My Vaio came like all Vaios with Windows Vista fully bloated with Sony and other crap software that I don't need and I don't like, eating a lot of laptop's resources. So I got an retailer Vista dvd and using my own serial number from the back of my Vaio I made a clean instal of Vista only with the programs I need. There are several threads here that can help you to do this, it's a good thing to do and I made this with all my computers I owned ever.

Anyone with a brand new camcorder having this problem? See text at:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885222
(Newer camcorders supposedly have different voltage characteristics.)
screen crashes for me on Vaio FW-270J running Vista Home Premium 64-bit. I suspect any camcorder crashes it regardless of which capture program. Sony VX-2000 and Canon Optura 600 failed.
Sony claims they are unaware of the problem and haven't had complaints. It is important that everyone call them and ask if they are aware of this problem from others...repeatedly. Direct them here and to other relevant threads. I will until they acknowledge the problem...which is an essential starting point.
ALSO: I read elsewhere that a clean install of Vista 64-bit (without the crapware) on a VAIO notebook... captured fine !!!

Yeeeeeah they haven't had any complaints
Texdig is exactly right, everyone needs to call so they at least know about it and can't claim there aren't any complaints. Be nice of course!

Same exact problem
Sony laptop VGN-FW270J
64 bit Vista
4 pin to 4 pin Firewire
Canon camera - several years old -
I had the same problem
with my Canon Elura 90 and my Sony VGN-FW200.
I reinstalled Windows Vista Home Premium and it works now. Infact I'm glad I had the problem because my laptop works much faster now. Not a little faster... a lot faster, especially when starting up or coming out of sleep mode, MUCH faster, and battery life is also much longer. Do yourselves a favor and do it.
I had never done that before, reinstall windows, and was a little scaredto but it was pretty easy.
What I did:
First save everything you need to on a disc and make a note of all the programs you need. Download windows vista from any torrent site, put it on a disc and put it in to the disc drive. Follow directions for reinstall, use your own registration code on the bottom of you computer and have another computer handy in case you run into an issue you can't figure out, you can look it up online.
Go to the sony download page specific for your model laptop and download everything you need or want and reinstall (I did almost everything and it's still fast). Finally, add all your previously saved programs and files.
It took some time about 8 hours total but now it's running as it should. -

Only problem is that the Blu-ray software from Sony can't be reinstalled so I had to install another one.
