Hi, i just got my first vaio, and i'm lovin' it!

i have a question though, at first i thought i'd have a LOT of bloatware, like.. norton antivirus trial.. and other stuff from third parties

but i just checked what's installed.. and it's just sony's "movie story" and other stuff like that, along with fingerprint reader.. etc. this doesnt really seem like bloatware to me, i checked through the list and i really don't notice anything that i'd consider bad (like trialware)

are those sony programs.. like Vaio Media Plus.. what people keep referrring to as bloatware? i read that people that choose fresh start still have some stuff preinstalled, i'm just wondering what it is exactly that they still have installed? mine looks pretty fresh to me already =/

    thanks in advance

A lot of these folks don't want any of the Sony apps. They do take up CPU cycles afterall. I cloned my 160GB drive before ever using it and replaced it with a new 320GB. I then installed and played all the games I wanted (the only reason I bought it was to play games when traveling). The Sony stuff did not seem to have any impact whatsoever. I eventually uninstalled most of it. I also uninstalled Microsoft Works and a few other trial programs or offers. Lowered the number of processes active at boot but didn't seem to make any difference playing games.

If you are happy, no need to worry. Just because someone else says it's an issue for them doesn't mean you'll care. Enjoy your new system.

    Cheers,

All of Sony's stuff, no matter how useful, is often classified as bloatware simply because it doesn't need to be there. Windows already has movie editing software, and can already work with biometric devices.

People do clean installs because they have no use for Sony's bloatware, and leaving that software on your OS installation only wastes disc space and resources.

The new Vaio's are really slimmed down with the extra software. So very liitle of what is referred to a 'bloatware' on the the current models that I've seen (and own), comnpared to the past.

i'm going to bring this thread back from the dead-- i'm wondering if it's possible to download "media plus" or "movie story" afterward, just in case for some weird reason I would ever want to use it

If you make the backup DVD set as instructed by Sony when you booted your machine for the very first time, then you will have an app for a full system recovery AND a standalone installer for the various drivers and applications. No need to download anything.
