    Hi there

    I have a Vaio VGN-S4M Laptop

Is there any way to mute the Sony Welcome chime which starts every time you boot it up.

It is a little noisy when using it on a quiet train.

    Thanks

    Ian

I don't think it's anything to do with Windows.

It's before windows loads itself, just after you switch on and it is a fixed volume.

    Muting makes no difference.

It could be in the bios, maybe, but I'm not sure.

You can change it in the BIOS: press “F2” to enter the BIOS, go to "Advanced" -> "Speaker Volume" and change it to "0" (no sound) or desired value between 0-10.

    Thanks Visioneer, that's sorted it.

I thought it might be something simple like that, but I just wanted to make sure.

    Regards

OR you can mute sound without going to bio setup.
    here's the easy step.
    Go to Start>All program>VAIO control center>Initial setting>Show boot animation(enable or disable)

Ha, I like the animation, but not the noise it makes....I used to put headphones in before turning it on. I like the BIOS solution, very nice.

It's always surprised me that Sony doesn't make this sound easier to disable ---- I mean, the number of situations in which a business user would want a startup sound on a laptop are few and far between, I'd imagine.

How does one manipulate this setting on an SZ5 or SZ6 laptop? I dont see any volume setting in the BIOS, and there is no "Initial Startup" in the VAIO Control Center. Thanks!
