I was wondering if Sony Canada has similar educational discounts as the USA store. I've also read of ppl being able to negotiate a discount on the phone. Is that true? thanks for the help!

From what I can see it is not officially the case, unfortunately. You can always try negotiating, however!

I tried negotiating, but the fools wouldn't budge, so I told him I was getting a mac and hung up. :p

Negotiating with a Sony Store in Canada is like negotiating with a brick wall. The FW was on sale at Best Buy and I went with the flyer at the Sony Store, hoping to at least price match it (so I wouldn't have to make another trip) but they were trying to sell me extra warranty when I only wanted a lower price for the laptop.

I dont really understand where sony style Canada finds their employees, when i went in to look at the FW i asked about the release date for the Z and CTO options, and the employee just looked at me, then about 10 seconds later he tries to sell me TZ *palmface* i just left after that.
plus we Canadians usually get the cold shoulder when it comes to savings. for example when i called in to order my FW, i tried to get the 100$ off with the ebates rebate trick but the operator told me that ebates doesn't apply to sonystyle.ca and then continued on trying to push accessories on me.

the savings are weak and nothing like the US, and the only savings are applied to the older notebooks.

perhaps newegg canada will launch before september ends, and then the pricing will be better there than on sonystyle.ca

yes, i would buy from the states (upcoming trip too!), but don't want to lose the warranty. I've asked, and the only way to get something fixed is if i shipped it back to the states, borrowing a friend's US address. too much hassle.

Snowpea - Are you saying that Sony Canada told you a device with an American warranty would need to be shipped back to the US for service?

That's interesting, because I just spoke with Sony Canada today and asked them the same question, and he told me they would service a device that was under an American warranty. Hmm....

Durrane - yes, the rep said that i would need a US address, and it will only ship to that after repairs. hmm.. maybe i will try asking again tomorrow.... i will post if i get a different answer. If they will service it under a US warranty, then buying from the sonystyle.com site would be a much better deal.

Snowpea - Let me know what you hear, either way. The rep I spoke to said definitely yes. I asked it there were any circumstances where they would not honour an American warranty from sonystyle.com, he put me on hold to speak with his manager, and said no - they will always accept an American warranty.

But, of course, how much can you trust what you hear over the phone? I'd love to know if you get the same response before I make the big purchase. :)

I called sonystyle.com today, and they confirmed that the warranty would not be void, but I would have to ship the notebook to the US for repairs, and that they would only ship it back to another US address. Hope this helps with your decisions!

i have no problem buying from the states (im in canada)

that being the case, whats the best deal out there right now on a FW? i really want a hi-color screen. 1209 from SS.com so far seems the best...
