    Hello All,

    I have a Vaio VGN-AR170.

Is there a way to disable the microphone? I don't mean to mute the microphone, but to actually disable it. Right now, if I go into the microsoft sound recorder and hit 'RECORD', it will record from the microphone, even if I turn on the hardware and software mute buttons. Turning down the volume slider does not help either.

I have called Sony tech support and they told me the microphone could not be disabled.

I have also tried plugging in an external microphone in the hope that it would switch off the internal microphone and that did not work.

Is there a registry switch or device in the hardware manager I might disable?

Thanks very much for any help. This is actually a critical issue for me.

    Thanks,

    George

check hardware profiles inside the control panel and disable it there -- or load up microphone data files in word processor -- and corrupt the code.

that will take care of it for you.

Have you tried plugging in something else to the external microphone jack?

I have been facing the same problem and just tried my iPod headphones into the microphone jack. I only tested the sound recorder... which no longer picks anything up. I haven't tried any other tests.

    Good luck.

listen. i had exactly same problem just a week ago. and eventhough i updated drivers many times, it stayed the same.
i was so mad, so i UNinstalled the sound card. after that, windows (vista) automatically reinstalled the driver. and it have worked well for me since that moment.
    good luck
    u can try

Are you sure you're adjusting the "Recording Control" buttons/sliders?

If you open the Windows Volume Control, there will be a bunch of controls for various devices depending on your settings. The microphone slider and mute checkbox will not affect the recording, it only controls the microphone from being output on the speakers.

If you click on the "Options->Properties" menu item, there will be a tab that allows you to select "Adjust volume for..." Select Recording and make sure the microphone is _checked_. Now the window will say Recording Control and there should be the microphone slider and a checkbox called 'Select'. Uncheck that box and see if it 'disables' the microphone.

Sorry if you've already tried this, but it isn't clear from your original post.
