I have a Sony Vaio E series laptop running win 7 64 bit.
Everything runs fine till I switch it up or restart. When it starts up, it cannot find the hard disk.
I would normally say faulty hard disk but if I go into the bios, don't save anything and exit, it will recognise the hard disk and start up.
Also if I pull the power cable and start up, after 3 or 4 goes, it will recognise the hard disk.

It happens on a 64gb SSD, a 500gb Sata drive and a 120gb sata drive so I know its not the hard disk at fault.

Anyone got any ideas? If not, any ideas how I could get my money back from the Sony shop that I bought this laptop from?

    Thanks guys!

    Hi,

If its under warranty, put the original hard drive in and log it as having a fault and let them sort it out.

I had this on a dell desktop where the bios tries to access the disk too quickly and the hard drive hasn't spun up yet so it reports as no disk or operating system not found. But I wouldn't expect it to happen with an SSD.

You could try rescanning the disks in the bios - if you have that option.

I originally took the original drive out because there was a high pitched squeel from the speakers when the computer was running. After some arguing with the guy from the Sony shop, he wouldn't take it back and I ended up buying a SSD to fix the problem.

Do you have any advice about being able to get a refund for the piece of crap laptop? If I walk into the Sony shop, they will keep the laptop for a couple of weeks then either say there isn't anything wrong and give me a bill for their time or offer me a replacement laptop.

How did you fix the problem with your Dell?

If I go into the BIOS straight away, it recognises the hard disk and will boot. But if I startup from scratch, it won't. Very weird...

    Thanks for your reply.

Ok, I don't know where you are at but I would suggest you find out what your consumer protection laws are like. In the UK we have the Sales Of Goods Act which gives consumers additional protection from the likes of 'the sony shop guy' who thinks he makes up the law.

Secondly I would suggest getting in touch with Sony customer services instead of the Sony shop. Explain the hd booting problem, but don't mention the fact you swapped the original hd. Try to sound worried and weak, do not get aggressive as customer services will then put up a defense. If its still under warranty and they take it back to fix it, get them to commit to how long it will take - then when that passes chase them - lots of calls to customer services etc...

    I'm in Perth, Australia.
I think the Sony customer services might be the way to go. Talking to the store manager was about as useful as talking to a brick wall.

I used to really like Sony too :( Watching the Simpsons on a 46 inch Sony TV from my PS3, going thru a Sony Amp and speakers and currently typing on my old Sony Vaio.

Will give the customer services a shout and see what happens.

    Thanks for your help mate.
