Hi guys,
I saw a very affordable Vaio Laptop at Sony's site and it's specifications are
Vaio E Series VPCEB14EN
Intel® Core i3-330M processor 2.13 GHz
Genuine Windows® 7 Home Basic 64-bit (English Version)
320 GB (Serial ATA, 5400 rpm)
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 Graphics (512 MB DDR3 SDRAM)
Ram 3 GB DDR3 SDRAM
I want to buy it but before purchasing it,
I want to ask questions.
Can I run good games like Stalker trilogy , Crysis, Mercenaries 2, Rainbow Six Vegas series, FarCry2etc.?
And what about designing ?
In Desktops like now I'm using, I can draw freely and easily with mouse in Photoshop and Flash. If I have a mouse Can I do the same with This Vaio ? is the screen big enough for drawing etc. ??
and the keyboard in this one is good enough for programming ?
I want to use this laptop 2-3 years or even more if it does work....flawlessly.
help...
Thanks.

No, no and yes.
1) 5470 will not run games like Crysis well, if at all.
2) If you're not planning to use external monitor, the low resolution is surely not good for Photoshop etc.
3) Yes they keyboard is great and thanks to numpad, it's good for programming.
I would recommend you to pay a bit more and go for the higher model of the same (EB) series, which has i5 processor, 5650 graphic card and FullHD screen. -
sad it can't run games like Crysis,
What about low settings, Can I play fluently in low settings Stalker and Crysis Mercenaries 2 etc. ?
Too bad I don't have any EB series available in my country.
There are other laptops which I can afford but they come with g210m and g310m.
What do I do.
By the way what do you think about Dell Studio 15, the newer one.
It got,
core i3 proccy.
3gb ddr3 ram
ati hd 5470 with 1gb vram
15.6 " 720p WLED (1366x768) Display with TrueLife™
1gb of Vram can do fairly well.
What do you say ?
If I can't get a good gaming laptop, I'll go for a laptop without graphics card and will purchase a PSP with it.
thanks -
The spec on the Dell studio is actually similar to the Vaio spec except for the bigger VRAM.
If you play a lot of demanding games, the 5470 chip might not be fast enough to let you play those games fluently. While important, VRAM is not everything. -
I need a comparison,
Please compare a Geforce 8800gs and ati HD5470 with 1gb vram.
thanks
EDIT: hey guys, I found another laptop from Acer. It's 5740g with core i3 proccy, 4gb ddr3 ram and ati 5650.
here in India, it comes for Rs.45000 approx.
One guy at Indian forums says if I cut the OS from Laptop I can get it for 40k.
Is that true ?
check here
thanks -
I'm sorry to tell you but vram is not really that important, if it's weak card like 5470. It's like having 12MPx camera in mobile phone.
I don't know CM2, but I think you'll be able to play Stalker without problems on medium/high settings.
The thing is that 5470 is just re-branded old graphic card, so not really powerful. You'll be able to play many games, but the 5650 would be more future-proof.
btw...what do you mean by that EB series is not available in your country? VPCEB14EN is EB series. -
It's written E series in Vaio Site.
and what about the acer 5740g ?
It has hd5640.
Can The price be reduced by cutting the OS ? IS it possible.? -
ofcoruse its possible. -
wow awesome, then I'll have to go with Acer 5740g.
Are there any technical or hardware related issues with Acer 5740g ? -
Make sure you update your bios to 1.16, otherwise you're going to have alot of battery problem. on the forum , if you search " 5740", it will show you thread with this problem.
I'm getting 5740g- 6979 for $799, is that more than 45000 rupees ? -

Even though it has a 64bit memory bus instead of a 128bit, it still has very good memory bandwidth because of the premium GDDR3 memory that Sony includes with it. I would say it gets about 25Gb/s of bandwidth, whereas my G210m gets about 16Gb/s overclocked and I can run Crysis in Medium settings pretty well. So I'd wager it can handle at least Medium levels competently with that much bandwidth and fill rate. It also supports AMD EyeFinity, but Crysis in EyeFinity mode on that particular card I don't think would work well. But as the others have said, the 5650 is a much better card. I think the 5640 is a typo because unless you guys know something, that card hasn't been announced.
Actually the 5470 is a new 40nm die based on the Park Gpu from the new 5xxx series desktop boards. -
@don86
no,
800$ will be near 37 thousands.

I am in India. No fair
Thanks for the battery stuff and all.
and by the way I am purchasing 5740g with ati5650
@XGX2007
thanks for the info, but I am going to purchase acer with 5650, it leaves 5470 far behind and can even run crysis at HIGH. OMG. I need something like this, I can pay a little more. -
-
Np man,
I'm buying the same laptop from newegg , it is for $799.
5650 is alot better than 5470, you can play every game on medium and some on ultra, which is good enough for me since i don't play much games on laptops. -
CAn we get the 5650 E series in the US?
-
My E series with ATI 5650 card is rated 25.3Gb/s of memory bandwidth using GPU-Z at factory clock settings (450Mhz).

I know, I was stating those figures as overclocked, as pretty much everyone with a sub-par gfx card is going to overclock to get better FPS sooner or later. -
I'm in the same situation as the OP. If you guys had to choose, would you choose the 5470g 6979 or the E series with 5470 GFX card? And why.
