    Hi,

I am interested in purchasing a Sony Vaio E Series laptop to replace my netbook and laptop, functioning as a device that is portable, light, powerful and large in capacity (I have both aforementioned devices to fulfill these attributes but I'd rather have one unified device). I am further interested in the E series because they are 14" in size; powered by the new i-core processors; and feature Blu-ray support.

Upon purchasing, I wish to connect it to my monitor for external viewing however I have read that (as per this website: How to Play Blu-ray DVDs with Windows) in order for Blu ray discs to be viewed on an external monitor, the graphics card needs "very specific characteristics and monitor with HDCP support." Graphics card of this Vaio is ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470; I cannot find any statement regarding if it can support HDCP. I understand that I need to change my monitor (manufactured in 2005) in order to support Blu ray discs from the connected Vaio.

Essentially, I am wondering what I need to be further aware of in order to successfully play Blu ray discs on the Vaio for viewing on an external monitor.

    Thanks.

the card supports HDCP for sure. Like all card from the last few years do, but if your monitor doesn't it wont work, so you need to check your monitor specs for that.

You'll be able to play bluray's using the vga output to your old monitor, no problem. hdcp only comes into play when using DVI or HDMI, but your notebook also supports that as well.
