    Hi there

Im still trying to workout and understand some kinks in my new Vaio EA.

I tried searching but havent found an answer to this one.
The fan is running non-stop, although not loud at all, its just running quietly in the background, even when idle, but just loud enough that its a bit annoying in a quiet room. There is no over heating issue's at all, but is there any way to turn it off or change settings somewhere?

Ive read something about going to power options, but I dont have the option of the silent mode, as can be seen in my attachment

    Thanks for any info!

I think that is something that has been implemented since the failing Nvidia GPU's. They try to keep a more consistent temperature, rather than when the heat passes a threshold then turn the fan(s) on. But yea, since having a Vaio, you can control whether you want the fan to be more oriented towards dissipating heat (like when gaming), or more oriented towards being quiet. As in your attachment, "Balanced" will give you quieter operation with lower fan speeds and higher temps, and "Performance" will keep the notebook cooler, but have higher fan speeds. Silent isn't an option on a regular notebook, because without fan activity there's no way to dissipate the TDP envelope.

    Thanks for the responses.

I have had the setting set on "balance" since when I got this machine (last week), but the fan is on all the time. Is that normal? I would expect it from my old Dell, but from a brand new computer, I thought the fan would be quiet for most of the time. I am not a gamer, just a regular everyday email, web browsing, watching video's, picture watching etc..nothing too demanding for the fan to be whirling all the time right?

Yea, the fan is supposed to be on all the time. Components don't like hot temperatures, but what they don't like even more is rapidly changing temperatures. With the fan on all the time, it can keep more consistent temperatures. The only notebooks that can usually be silent are the ULV or thin-n-light notebooks, because they have super-low TDP's and when not being stressed they don't get hot enough to warrant fan activity.
