I have found some info on the 2560x1600 topic here, but so far it seems not very viable.

One thing I have found that sort of works is...

Multi Monitor - Dual Monitor - KVM switch

Right now, I am running my Samsung 305t plus at full resolution from my VAIO F. Only problem is it requires my desktop pc to do it. And yes, it is a little slower than running it naturally - but not bad really.

I thought I would share as it might be a solution for someone. I would really love to be able to run my 30" from the VAIO. It befuddles me as to why laptop makers have such a blind spot for this functionality.

    Best,
    BIJ

That is NASTY lol. You need an expresscard that does dual link DVI :)

Is there an expresscard solution available anymore? The one I have seen mentioned appears to be discontinued.

It seems like such a simple product....

this is something im also curious about however i dont exactly understand your problem?

from what i got you cant run your monitor at its native resolution because the graphics card only allows you to run it at 1920x1080..or is it something else? if this is the case then i cant run my 24" at its native resolution either..

Most 30s are 2560x1600. According to the specs on my Sony F, it's HDMI will only go to 1920x1080... which is stupid because it stops you from using half of the wide screen monitors out there that are 1920x1200. I don't know why they would do that, but that is what it says.

The HDMI spec allows 2560x1600, as do the chipsets of most of the mobile gpus. Yet nobody mainstream but Apple does it.

I have never actually seen a card with HDMI out that does 2560... but it is possible. Most any midlevel desktop card now does 2xdual link dvi - which is what a 30 needs.

Even the new HP Envy 17 - obviously going after Apple - doesn't do it. I really don't understand.

I sure will be glad when this 1080p phase goes away. 16:9 really stinks for most everything but watching movies.

well there goes any hopes of me using my 24" at native resolution..

edit: arent there programs that force a the resolution you want? cant remember the name but maybe that can be of some use..reforce or something along those line i think it was called

edit 2: nvm thats to force refresh rate apparently..

Since my post, I read someplace here that there is a way to override the 1080 restriction, but I do not know how to do it.

The 30" is one step farther, needing to go up to the next level of HDMI spec I believe. I broke down and ordered an IPS 23" 1080p... sigh... :-(
