    Hey there,

I know this is a slightly older thread, hope people don't mind me re-opening it?!?!

I have recently purchased an FW31M Vaio, which came with 4gig of RAM, but notice that, like in the discussion above, only 3gig of it is recognised.

I have read that Vista Premium 32bit can recognise up to 4 gig of RAM, so why won't my laptop see the full 4gig, and use it?!?!

Seems a bit pointless of Sony installing 4gig of RAM if it can't all be used.

Vista 32bit can't address 4GB. If you update SP1, it can see 4GB, however, if you open task manager, only 3GB is addressed.

Is the 4gb still used even if not 'addressed' or 'seen'? There is so much conflicting info on different sites...

    Hello to all...

I've a Fe31M with Win Xp SP3. My question is:

    • Can I use more RAM than the announced by Sony?
    • What kind of RAM must I buy?
    • The max I'll be able to use is 3gb, or the laptop recognises only 3 but is still able to use 4gb?

    Thank you

Now that I know that I'll only be able to use 3gb with Windows, and that ?ve buyed the 4gb 533Mhz...

You people say that Windows only let us work with 3gb... But and if we used the Windows Xp 64 bit?

    robdope,

Did you ever find a solution to your 4GB memory problem with the black screen but the system booting up? I'm experiencing the same problem...

    Thanks,
    MX

Hey, i haven´t been here for a while, but nevertheless
no I didn´t figure out to use more than 2gb ram in my sony fe31m.
Since I use win xp sp3 i cannot say how the system will behave with win7 or vista installed.
i guess the black monitor is because of the videocard driver. that driver allocates his data in the wrong ram arrays.
under win 7 or vista it should work. never tried though.

so install win7 or vista and try if the monitors shows up.

and, you will never use more than 3gb ram with that notebook, that´s simply because the notebook is not physically assigned to ram which is above 3gb.

so have a try and let us know.

for others it works, maybe there are two models of the fe31m, who knows.

    greetz rob
