I got my FS500 last week. I created the recovery disks and then formatted the drive and loaded Windows XP Pro on my machine. I reinstalled the drivers and everything seems to be OK (almost). When I go into control panel...hardware, I am missing the driver for the Other Devices - Mass Storage Controller. Does anyone know where I can get this? I tried the drivers page on the Sony site but I can't seem to get the right file with this driver. Thanks.

Did you install the Memory Stick Driver? If that doesn't work did you install the Sony Notebook Utilities Last? If you read the instructions is says to make sure you install the "Sony Notebook Control and Sony Shared Library" BEFORE you install the Notebook Utilities.

    Just a thought

I'm getting mine next week with XP Home and i'm going to upgrade to XP Pro..

What's the best way to upgrade?

Should I buy a full OEM version and do a clean install or should I buy XP Pro upgrade and install it over the pre-installed home version?

    Appreciate the input.

You can buy an upgrade version if you have an original 98,ME,2K disk to insert.

I did a clean install of XP home because I couldn't stand all the pre-loaded crap they had on the system.

No offense here, but I wonder that all of these problems including DOWNLOADING own recovery CD, why would you guys want get Vaio?? especially FS-series. Guys come this site, notebookreview.com should know more computer stuff that normal people out there.
I admit that I was going to get FS because of its name and beautiful scheme, but I decided not to since its spec is nothing but old hardware. Come on, think about it. Laptop introduced in 2005, with 4200RPM of HDD, DDR 333MHz memory, GeForce 6200? Oh, please.
I just get DELL 9300, yest it is big and heavy but it is probably the best laptop in the market. And I got it $1700. Not only sony, but other brand definitely offer you way better laptop spec than Sony does. I am no savior here, but trust me, FS does not deserve your money, unless you want to buy another laptop within this year.

    Greg,

I'm evening thinking about installing Windows Media Center 2005...

This laptop comes with a 100GB hard drive which is good for storing large video files, however it has a slow data rate at 4200, do think that's enough speed to handle the Media Center OS?

I'm thinking you would need to upgrade to a faster hard drive...I noticed how Sony doesn't offer Media Center as an option but this laptop is being marketed as portable multimedia unit.

    Any opinions...

Isn't one Media Center's specs state that is should run on at least a 5400RPM Drive?

Do you really need Media Center if there isn't a TV tuner built in?

But to answer your question, I think it would work, but maybe not that well

I'd like to see a how to on replacing the hard drive in this model.

I think your right, the hard drive needs to be at least 5200RPM and you may also need a more powerful processor as well.

I'm most likely just going to do a clean install of XP Pro when I get it.
