Folks, I had a question on the SSD drives used in the FW590 CTO (configure-to-order).

I know that they have a 128GB option and also a 256GB option for their SSD drives and wanted to know the make/model/manufacturer of the drives.

As we know, there is a world of difference between the performance of the various SSD drives available, with the Intel models being the highest performing ones, while some of the other SSD drive models being pretty poor from a performance perspective.

I talked to Sony support who expressed complete ignorance on the make/model/manufacturer of the SSD drives employed in the FW models (VGNFW590 CTO is the model I am looking for) and thus was wondering if the folks on the forum know the details on it.

    Thanks a bunch in advance.

Anybody have any insights on this ? I am assuming that somebody or the other on this forum, has disassembled their laptop or have seen detailed specs that indicate who the manufacturer of the SSD drives is/are, and what the make and model is.

Just to clarify the reason behind the question, please find below a detailed writeup on SSD drives, their strengths/limitations vis-a-vis hard-drives and the HUGE performance differences between the various models available in the marketplace.

    Excellent read (16-17 pages) !

I would just get the cheapest hard drive possible for the vaio and pick up an OCZ or Intel SSD and not worry which manufacturer made it. If I had to guess I would say samsung, but again, thats just me speculating. I just bought a Intel G2 160GB and its absolutely amazing in my vaio FW. My previous 320gb mechanical is now in a nice portable enclosure :)

This is an excellent idea ! Just buy the default drive that comes along with the product and then swap it with a 3rd party SSD later on.

Could very well be. Sandisk is selling the SSD for the new Sony X netbooks, as per a news release. But the SSD in the others could very well be from Samsung.

Not having done such swaps (and not being very savvy working on computer h/w), how involving is the effort to swap the HD with the SSD ? Is it a DIY exercise or would it better be handled by someone more technically savvy (being a laptop) ? I am assuming all the installed s/w and the OS etc., will also need to be moved to the SSD from the HD.
