I want to know what kind of gaming performance I can expect from the new Vaio FW290.

    The specs are:

    Intel Centrino 2 Processor T9600 (2.8Ghz, 1066Mhz FSB)
    4GB DDR2-800 RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 (512MB)
    XBRITE-FullHD 1920x1080 LCD
    320GB 7200rpm HDD

How will this notebook perform in newer games - Crysis, COD4, Warhammer Online, WoW Lich King, Age of Conan, etc.

except crysis, those games will play smooth with mostly high settings.

is the hd 3650 ddr2 or ddr3? (if it's ddr3 it will be even better)

It will play all current games (including Crysis) on at least medium settings, probably highs on most games. RTS games should fair particularly well because of the fast CPU.

Is the HD 3650 on the FW DDR2 or GDDR3? How much of a performance difference is there?

Then expect Crysis at Medium-High and most others at High.

This configuration seems very good for now, but will it be outdated soon, or is it future proof, at least for a while?

It's pretty future proof, graphics card will be the first to go.

Yes, the processor isn't the main bottleneck.

Is it at all possible to upgrade the graphics card in the FW, to say an HD 3850/3870 or an Nvidia GPU?

It may be possible, if only the graphics card wasn't soldered to the motherboard. Really, its dissapointing... :(

So in certain notebooks, like the Sager NP8660, Alienware M17X/M15X, etc, the GPUs can be changed, so are they not soldered to the motherboard?

not really knowing why soldering something to the motherboard makes it unchangable...

solders arent that hard to get off... is it a limitation of the space or pins required? or just that people wont do it ?

For all intents and purposes it's not possible unless you have an mxm card in your laptop. Even with mxm you're choices are limited at best.
