I just recieved my Sony Vaio FW490 today. After uninstalling the trial version of Office 2007 (student version), windows refuses to boot normally. I tried several system resores without success. Although it said that the restore worked properly, I kept rebooting to repair windows or vaio restore center or something like that. I finally called Sony tech support, and they walked me through restoring the C drive to its original state option. It didn't work. I called back, with the same result. They are very nice and told me that if necessary they will send me a set of install dvds, but I was hoping someone here could come up with some suggestions. Thanks.

Hmmm. My earlier FW model is also booting up much more slowly since I uninstalled the trial version of Office with 32-bit Vista as well. Like very, very differently. Black screen flashes and the first boot-up of Explorer is slower as well.

Something must be going on with the trial versions of the MS software. So this is the famous Sony bloatware problem, eh? Sounds to me like another Microsoft mess....

    Ideas anyone?

(P.S. Maybe rename the thread since it isn't a 64-bit problem...)

I'm embarressed to admit that I left a blank dvd in the PC, and this was the cause of my pc refusing to boot up. I'm surprised , however, because I would think that a message should have pooped up warning me. Also, I thought that when booting, the "c" drive always boots first.

Nothing in my CD drive -- and I even have an SSD. The slower boot-up since the uninstall of the Office 2007 trial version is noticeable.

Yes. I had used the computer for about two months (trial version is 90 days) and the only thing I did to change the computer's configuration was to remove the trial version. Then I installed an Enterprise version of Office and realized the computer was booting up much more slowly.

So, I cleaned out everything, did an uninstall of the Enterprise version, checked all Windows updates and deinstalled any from the earlier student version and from the Enterprise installation. Computer still boots up much more slowly even though no Office is on it at all now.

Again, no other software so no other new startup items.

But defragging an SSD generally slows it down, right? A solid-state drive doesn't operate in the same manner as an HDD. Which might mean that the installing and uninstalling of large files slowed down the SSD but the slowness is in ALL aspects of a boot-up, from start to finish. The SSD is the Samsung 128GB MLC, by the way.
