I have a serious dillemma , I'm trying to install Windows 7 - 64 Bit on my 32-bit vista laptop.

    I have a sony vaio fz290.

I burned the image of a 7077 build I downloaded from demonoid. Booted off of it and clicked install , and then I got an error about not having a Cd/Dvd drive device driver missing , I tried a lot of things and searched all over the internet.

A few things to ask as I'm desperate

What can I do to make this work ?

Do I have to format my comp for this to work or can I just update over the 32-bit installation

OR can I just install on a partition ?

    Thank You

Try mounting the .iso file with something like Daemon Tools. That's what I did, and it worked fine.

I mounted the iso to power iso manager , Ran it in windows vista 32 , got an error saying can't run this program because it's built for 64 bit version or something like that.

Like I said , I have also tried booting off the burned image. Didn't work

You cannot upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit. You must do a clean install of the 64 bit OS. You can also create a separate partition and install it there.

I tried going into , Device manager , and partitioning the drive by shrinking the extra space but the option to shrink was greyed out , I had a copy of partition magic but it's only good for xp :(

    Any help ?

I really would not have to format the whole drive , it's a 180gb drive. I have about 50gb free (and more if I need it)

Delete the system restore points, set the page file to a minimum, disable hibernation, defragment, and restart, run the disk management again to see if will allow you to shrink.
You can use programs like Gparted, Easeus home edition to manage partitions.

I would wait for the official Windows 7 RC which will be out on May 5th.
