I just bought an FZ290 with BD Read/Write Refurb from Sony for $1350, but I have run into numerous problems with output thru HDMI, so I was considering returning the FZ and buying an ASUS M50sv-A1 when they come out. The real problem for me here is that the Sony is a 2.4GHz with 3GB of RAM and has Blu Ray, whereas the ASUS will have the 2.5 T9300 and 3GB but no Blu Ray. I would not compromise the processor for the Blu Ray ASUS model mainly because it is only playback and not write. I was considering getting the LG Blu Ray Rewritable/HD DVD drive and buying an external case for it to use thru USB with my HP dv9700t, but I am wary to do so because of lack of BD playback software. I have uses ASUS before and absolutely love them. I'm just debating the importance of carrying around a laptop with BD Rewritable and its actual necessity.

I just bought also FZ290 with BluRay in order to output via HDMI, what are your issues? The only "issue" or known limitation is it doesn't pass through 5.1 audio

I'd check to see if your FZ isn't defective. Maybe exchange it for a new one?

The screen wont transmit to my monitor. I'm just going to send it back and take a look at the ASUS. I Have a feeling I may buy an HP tower, since I am not so sure I really need the Blu Ray right now.

in relation to this question, would a Sony with an HDMI output show a 1920x1080 image on my 1080p HDTV even though the laptop's screen won't handle that res?

I have a huge feeling that it's related specifically to the unit that you have, but I could be wrong. And yeah the Asus M series looks good (except for the processor), and it's very attractively priced. Good luck!

yes Sony with HDMI would output full 1080p resolution and audio (stereo only)
