    Hello,
I just purchased a VGN-P788K second hand. This machine did not come with the noise cancelling headphones when new but I know some P series computers (if not all) have compatibility with Sony's noise cancelling headphones that come with the computer. I have a pair of MDR-NC021 headphones from another Sony Computer that has the noise cancellation feature assuming the computer has the proper software.

My P had a fresh install of Win7 when it was sold to me. I've installed the Realtek drivers from Sony's website for my particular model but the noise cancelling doesn't seem to come into effect. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

There is a possibility that the P uses a different type of noise canceling jack than the notebook you obtained your headphones from. I know my Vaio Z and my girlfriend's TT have identical looking noise canceling headphones until you look at the jack.

    But to enable the software
    right-click your volume icon>>
    click playback devices>>
    click properties button w/Speaker selected>>
    Select Enhancements Tab>>
    Check Noise Canceling function

Unfortunately my P lacks that "Noise Cancelling Function" option. There's "Voice Cancellation" but the description talks about something optimal for karaoke. I looked at that menu on my Z and I do see the option and it's obviously checked. I wonder if it's possible that this model P just doesn't support it, or if I can install drivers from another Sony device...

If you haven't tried this you could try going to the Realtek folder in your program files and open the vncutil. You need to make sure that all of the options are checked. Then reboot and connect your headphones.

I suppose you could try the Sony TT 32bit audio drivers also.

I had tried to use VPC-Z's NC earphones with P688E/G.

My P didn't come with NC earphone when it was purchased as new.

I was doing a research to get this working and also tried the various versions of realtek audio driver that contains NC util (OEM, Regular) but didn't have any success.

I will try the help above and report back.

but... still I don't think it will work... :(

Rachel, I went to my program files and found vncutil but when I click on it to run, it registers my click but no application opens. Help?
I tried the TT drivers but they didn't give my the noise cancelling option in the preference/ enhancement menu.

If you're able to use those headphones that suggests that your computer has built in NC hardware. I purchased those headphones for my TT that has the NC built in. They wouldn't fit a notebook that never had this feature.

You should be able to use Vaio P software for your laptop. I suggest that you delete everything relating to audio drivers that you've installed and try again and restart.

FYI my headphones are the standard 3.5mm with an extra band, NOT the ones with that extra notch on them.

Here's my headphones, as you can see there's an extra stripe and no notch:

Do your headphones start with "MDR"? The full name one mine is "MDR-NC021."

It certainly is possible that my P doesn't have the hardware built in since it didn't come with a set out of box. The 2nd Gen Ps have them in the box, so it's possible that none of the 1st Gen models had the hardware, or only some versions had it.

And per forum rules, the max photo size we can hotlink is 500X500?

I've just had a look at my headphones and they are MDR-NC021 and they just look like that picture i linked to above.

    Edited to add:

This model is meant to have built in NC hardware. Try the drivers for this model.

Thanks for the links to the drivers. Unfortunately the first driver (VGP-P15) won't run on mine due to a Vista/ Win7 incompatibility issue. The second driver installed but not visible changes were made in the Realtek menu. The noise cancelling feature is still absent.

I'm starting to think my computer simply doesn't support this feature.
