Hello, I recently bought Sony VAIO VPC-F11S1E/B [model F of the vaio family]. I am REALLY GLAD with build quality and everything else as usual in VAIO laptops but ONE thing is just driving me mad- the noise the CPU fan is making. It's hard to expain but as a former VAIO FE user (I bought that laptop 3 years ago)I am used to silence and this F11 is ....like a jet plane, the noise the fan makes is unacceptable for me. In previous VAIO POWER MANAGEMENT versions there was an option to control how fast the fan goes(the vaio managements were for windows xp) In the power management installed in F11 no such option is enabled and I couldn't find any version for Windows 7 with the option to control the cpu fan. If you happen to know how to control the noise the fan makes or any other solution to make this beatiful laptop make less noisy and more friendly for your ears I will be grateful forever.

you'll have to live with the noise when it ramps up unfortunately. This is one of the compromises you'll have to make with a quad-core laptop.
So far there are no settings by Sony, Windows, or current aftermarket software that's allowing successful fan control.

It's also a bit unfair to the F11 to compare it to the FE. (though it's natural to compare it to your previous laptops.) They're in completely different categories. (Dual core vs. Quad core) (Cat vs. Lion)

My i7-820QM consistently outpaces my FW490 with a 3.06ghz C2D processor by more than half the time in the Cad and 3d applications i'm using.
Others have reported amazing time results with their video rendering. This is what the i7-720, 820 and onwards were made to be used.

If you want a quieter F11 and live outside of North America, try the non quad-core versions like the i7-620, i5, or i3.
