Vaio S laptops make a really ugly sound from the CD drive when waking up from sleep or booting up. The only solution I found to remove the sound is to disable CD altogether in the BIOS menu. But this effectively removes the CD drive from my computer unless I re-enable it again. Has anyone found a way to remove the ugly sound when booting or waking without disabling it altogether in the BIOS?

You have found the one and only way to remove the sound. By the way, this is not related only to the Vaio S, but to any notebook with a slot-in disc drive. Atleast I have yet to see (or hear) a notebook with slot-in drive that doesn't produce this sound.

My old Dell Studio 15 had a slot loading CD slot and it did not make any noises. That was my only other laptop with a CD slot so I was surprised when I heard the noise from the S. Thanks for that though, didn't know they were that wide-spread.

Well you got me then, I really haven't heared of a slot loading drive without that weird sound before. But then it's kinda disappointing that the S makes that noise. My good old XPS M1330 also made it but your Studio 15 doesn't, so when Dell has fixed it why didn't Sony

Do you think it is software related or is it something in the software of the drive itself?
Because otherwise putting in a different drive might help. -
As far as I know the drive is checking for a disc when the sound appears. I guess the sound is hardware related, while the firmware tells the drive when to check for discs (e.g. on boot, wake etc.). But I'm just making guesses here.
