So I did a search and came up with nothing. But basically, most laptops or desktops - when you plug in headphones the laptop recognizes this and adjusts the volume and other audio settings based on what you had last set for that device. This doesn't work on my Vaio S and does not work for the new external speakers I just bought either.

I feel like this must be a driver issue but I do not see any updates for the drivers or anything like that.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to solve this issue?

Doesn't HDMI cable to the Laptop and HDTV produce the same results? I understand On the Laptop Start > Control Panel > Sounds > Right click on the "Digital Output Device" and set it as default to output sound to HDTV. When finished you must remember to set the default back to the laptops speakers. The audio setting is NOT saved for HDMI. Which scenario do you find more inconvenient?

Maybe its motherboard/soundcard specific. I know for a fact my desktop at home does.

How it works is that windows realizes that something has been plugged into a port so it changes the sound device from the speakers to headphones or to external speakers and remembers volumes for those. What our laptops use it a device called "Speakers/HP" which means both speakers and headphones are always connected but it sound is only sent to one at a time.

The other way lets you use two devices together or individually and sets specific volumes for each.

My previous laptop did this for one of its two headphone ports in that it would remember the volume whenever I plugged in headphones. As far as I know, it's something the hardware does since I'm pretty sure I was using the generic windows driver on that laptop and there were only 2 sound devices - HDMI and the normal speakers.

That said, my new S15 does not do this and retains the volume level between headphones and built-in speakers. I liked the old laptop's way of handling volumes a whole lot more so I hope there is a way of getting it on the S15, but I wouldn't be that optimistic

If I recall correctly, my previous laptop with a (n otherwise not so good) Realtek audio chipset did this.

My SA does detect when headphones are used but sadly not like the OP (and me too) wants. It correctly enables Dolby enhancements when using the built in speakers and disables those whenever I plug in my headphones. Maybe some driver modding could offer separate volumes?
