Nice to finally say "hello" to everyone here. Long time lurker, first time poster![]()
I'm looking very strongly at a "customized" Vaio S-series right now (SVS series), but I'm really confused at an option and I'm hoping someone here can help me out.
The issue in particular is that of the hard drive options, in particular how you can have two SSD's in RAID-0 PLUS an optical drive. There are two questions I have with this:
1. Why can you not have 2x 64GB SSD's when you buy it laptop with 12GB of memory, when you CAN have 2x larger SSD's with that much memory? Is that simply a marketing ploy?
2. I'd much rather buy the laptop with a regular HDD now and put in a SSD (or set of SSD's) later. My concern though is that there is only so much room in the laptop, and since they don't toss out the optical drive to put in the second SSD, is the "second SSD" something soldered on maybe or some kind of proprietary system? Or are there actually two connectors available under the cover when you purchase a mechanical HDD-based system, of which they only fill one?
Any help/insight would be appreciated. If anyone has pictures of a tear-down I would really appreciate it if you could post them.

which size S series are you talking about the 13.3" or the 15.5"?
Their SSDs in the 13" laptops tend to be of non-standard form, which means they can stack them and get crazy hard drive space without much physical space (ie. the Vaio Z 13.3" w/ a 1TB (4x256GB SSD)). However, I'm not too sure about the S series, but it would sound like that. As for the RAM question, there might be a problem with spacing issues, but I can't say for sure until you tell us which model you're looking at.
here's some teardown guides from the 2011 S (same chassis as the 2012 S): http://forum.notebookreview.com/son...a-sc-sd-series-owners-thread.html#post7278110
