    Hi All

I’m new to this forum and to Sony laptops so I’ll apologies in advance for asking old questions or posting in the wrong bit!
Got me a custom S series VPCS12V5E a couple of weeks ago and took advantage of the i7 free upgrade.
Really wanted a blu-ray drive but couldn’t justify spending almost £700.00 more for the VAIO S (X) Series.

Is it possible to upgrade the optical drive to a blu-ray drive? (Model No. ?)
Can this be done without having to strip down half the laptop and risk voiding the warranty? (Pictures / guide?)

Thanks in advance for any help / advice

    Cheers
    Keef

If I remember correct, the S series uses the 12.7mm drives? If so, a Sony BD-5730s should fit without issues. They cost US$140 off ebay.

Needless to say, you'll have to be rather confident taking apart your machine and fitting that in. Sony in most countries will not do it for you. It involves opening your machine up, and I believe with the S series it's just a unscrew, unplug, swap procedure for the optics. Openning up the machine voids warranty. Though provided you put it together properly, Sony won't know anything...

If the S series does come with the 9.5mm drives, then you should be looking at the Panasonic UJ232a or UJ242a.

Regardless of which model, make sure the drive open button, the emergency pinhole, and the lights all 'lineup' with the drive bezel. If not, then the models above will not work with the S series (they should though...)

What is the current optics drive model in your machine at the moment? Can be checked in device manager.

    Thanks for the reply.
The drive in mine is an Optiarc AD-7930H - not sure if thats 12.7mm or 9.5mm?
Was hoping the Blu-rya upgrade wouldnt involve taking the laptop apart - read somewhere about just 4 screws underneath (thought it sounded to good to be true!)
