So I'm springing for a new laptop, and I'm leaning toward a Vaio S with the following specs:

    i7-2640M processor
256gb SSD + 512gb SSD in the optical drive
    8gb RAM

I won't be doing any serious gaming on this, so will it make much of a difference if I wait for the IB refresh? I'm headed to college next year, so the Vaio S seems like a great option in that A: it has sweet battery life (w/ the sheet), B: it's compact and light yet I can still cram 500gb+ into it without selling my soul, C: I really like the design. I need it by August-ish, so would the performance upgrade from the IB refresh be worth the wait?

    Thanks!

P.S. - Also, would it be worth it to wait for W8 or will I be able to install that on a preexisting system one it drops?

The current S series is so badly designed, I'd question your sanity by wanting to spend all that money on one.

I'd wait. Maybe the new S won't have inadequate cooling & noisy fans that disturb everyone in the same room as you? Maybe the new S won't have a really poor screen either?

i was thinkin about getting an S series too.. but the cooling problems/fan noise seems to be an issue. i need to get an i7 for my work, i think.. and that'd probably generate more heat. and the noise is one of the reasons im trying to get rid of my current vaio SZ (well, not really, but its super annoying) - now i cant seem to decide! if only the Z wasnt so ridiculously pricey :p

The difference between the i5 and dual-core i7 like that in the S* series isn't that large. 1MiB extra L3 cache and a few 100 MHz more for a little bit more heat under load.

It seems the noise problem depends on individual machines, my SA is very silent while browsing/reading documents/writing (so silent that I can hear the SSD work in fact :p) but yes, under load the fan noise is a bit irritating. Not so bad that a pair of open headphones on low volume doesn't work for gaming thought.
    YMMV.

Well if you don't need an optical drive, can always opt for the new sony ultrabook

thing is, I doubt the screen will be any good.

Well, if that's the new S series and it's coming out that early I think I should definitely wait for that. However... Is this one supposed to come with the IB processors? Also, it's likely that no one has any way of knowing this, but any idea if, without an optical drive, there's gonna be an option to get at least 500gb SSD in the new S?

well 256 will def be an option, I am sure the CTO could have the 512GB SSD option but that will not be cheap. Beaups says it is not the replacement of the S, but a new model, T series.

I might go for the new Asus Zenbook if it A: comes out sooner than the Sony, and B: is guaranteed to have at least 512gb SSD
