I call the spanish SonyStyle and they told some specs of new S3XP.

    Centrino 760 (2ghz/533bus)
1024MB Ram (unknown if its DDR2 or Not)
80gb HD (unknown if its Serial ATA or not, and if its 5400)
    Geforce with Turbocache and 128Mb
    it weights 1.89kg

So if its 760 -> 533 it will be sonoma *O/*

but it a bit surprising that the weights doesnt was 1.95 like in japanese site for sonomas... :/

so maybe the S3VP will be 2.13ghz/100gb/2gb RAM...

In the US, seems like ATI 9700 is standard instead of the GeForce.

Yes the S3 series will be available in 2.5 weeks
Saw a pre-production S3 yesterday and it looks the same as an S2 (obviously!) I was only concerned that it was rather on the warm side. Almost as bad as an Apple Ti-PB (if you know how hot they get!!)

I'm going for an S3XP myself!

Does anyone know the spec differences between the S3VP and the S3XP?
In the uK you seem to only be able to get the VP from Sony, but other websites are offering the s3XP. also it seems only pre-orders are avaiable at present?

    Cheers

I really wish they kept the 9700 or went with a better Nvidia solution. This is quite a huge step down in gaming performance. :(

Has anyone seen a good side by side comparison of the new (sonoma) and old (dothan) S series (in UK S2XP vs. S3XP). Is the extra clock speed worth waiting for? Is NVIDIA's 128MB (32+96) GeForce Go6200 TurboCrap really an upgrade from the 9700/64MB?

    Hope you guys can help.

The two cards aren't even comparable. The 9700 was a performance mid-range card and the 6200 is a bottom of the chain budget graphics solution (6200-6250-6600-6800). It's more comparable to the X300 instead. Remember that the 9700 = X600. The kind of card always takes precedence over the installed memory. To exaggerate and make my point, an X800 that had 64 MB memory would beat the heck out of a 6200 with 256 MB.

    Thanks Eliwood

Just the news I was looking for as I have decided to buy 'old' instead of joining the queue for a second rate card... [ ;)]
