    Hello all,
My 1 month old Vaio SA speakers just stopped working tonight. I have not added or changed anything before they stopped working. I have reinstalled the drivers and done the normal trouble shooting. Any ideas?

The sound mixer has the green bar going up and down when I try and play audio but nothing is coming from the speakers.

Do you hear sound from the headphones? Have you by any chance connected some old, bent headphone jack in there? Why i asm asking is... when you connect headphones, or earphones, there is a switch in there which switches off sound to the laptop speakers. Now its possible that that switch didnt spring back to the normal position when you removed the headphones. This may happen with some old headphones if the metal jack is twisted or screwed up. Just check it.

On many Sony laptops there is no longer the sort of switch you are talking about. There is a switch, however all it does is tell the driver that there is or is not a set of headphones plugged in. The driver itself then routes the signal to the speakers or the headphone jack. The OP should open up the sound control panel and see if the machine thinks there are headphones or speakers attached. Where to find this varies based on the model of Vaio. I don't know where it is on the SA.

I will have to check the sound control panel. When I connect the laptop to my TV via push2tv the sound plays perfectly so I guess the driver is stuck in the push2tv mode.

I just did a complete reinstall of the OS off of the partition as a last resort and still have no speaker sound on the laptop....sounds like it may be hardware failure at this point. But that seems unlikely since the unit is barely 40 days old and really not used all that much.

Open the sound control panel applet and make sure the sound is being routed to the right output device, in this case the speakers, not spdif or hdmi. Select speakers from the list and set as default.

Right click the speaker icon on your taskbar, select Playback Devices, and make sure speakers are the default device (have the green check-mark).

Yes the speakers are the default. Guess I'll have to send it in for warranty.

Turns out my Vaio is eligible for on-site repair. Initiated the repair today and Sony says a tech will call me in 1-2 days to schedule a time for the diagnosis/repair.
