Hi, in my notebook (Vaio VPCSA3J1E/Xi) with Windows 8 RTM the webcam cannot be used. It says "Unknown device".
Is there any driver for the Exmor webcam?
-
-
The driver of the webcam is supposed to be installed with windows8.
I think there are some problems with the webcam.
I also had the same issue before, but i had it fixed at vaio center.
I recommend you to go to sony center -
Hi thanks for your answer. Before i call Sony, i want to try if in ubuntu this webcam works (for see if the problem is hardware or software)
-
I don't know why, but after modify some settings in bios (modded) the webcam has returned to work!!
-
The problem is not related to the bios, but to the standby mode!
When i close the lid, and turn on my Vaio from sleep the webcam stops working. There is a baloon that says "USB device not recognized". All other USB devices like mouse and external hard drive works fine but the webcam not.
Are there any solutions? -
I fixed the issue restoring default in bios menu.
-
I also had the same problem with you.
I tried to do just like you to restore default setting in bios but i couldn't fix it
I did everything i know to fix it but in my case, there was a problem with hardware, the webcam cable
Anyway,it's good to hear from you that you solved the problem.^^:hi2: -
Unfortunately, the problem returns every time i wake up the notebook after 2-3 time that i put it in standby.
If it's the webcam cable how can i fix this? -
Now i've rebooted and the webcam still not work... Unknown device says.

I'm having the exact same problem even after installing some webcam firmware update that I found on the sony vaio support site in Malaysia or something like that. It supposed to fix this issue. I installed windows 8 and bye bye webcam.
-
i'm also having the exact problem even after installing webcam firmware.
i already replaced it with new one at sony center 2 weeks ago.
what's wrong with the new webcam firmware?
is there anyone who fixed it? -
Same issue here.... VPCSE15FB.... Any new idea?
-
I contacted Sony support and it seems they haven't yet released a Windows 8 driver for my webcam (on a SA390x here). They told me "they're working on it."
If anyone has gotten their webcam working in Windows 8, please chime in. -
Mine works fine, not that I use it much. My hardware is probably different from yours, though.
-
Can you tell me what model you're using? And if it works, which driver are you using? Thanks.
-
My model is in my signature - VPCZ115GG. Driver is Microsoft Windows 8 default. ksthunk.sys and USBvideo.sys 6.2.9200.16384 (win8_rtm.120725-1247).
Using ArcSoft Webcam Companion 4. -
Thanks. I'd forgotten about the ArcSoft software, but since you mentioned it I opened the software and was prompted to update it. After the update, the webcam is working again. That's much simpler than I would have imagined.
-
My Vaio F2's webcam isn't working either. So much for "fully supported Vaio models." Boo. Fortunately, my Duo 11's webcams work fine and are better quality than the F2's ever were.

If you recently installed Windows 8 on a computer that had a different operating system on it and you can get your webcam to work on the desktop side of Windows 8 but not in the Metro side of Windows 8, this may solve your issue.
Follow these steps to get your webcam working in both desktop and metro sides of Windows 8.
1. Go Settings/Control Panel/Hardware and Sound/Devices and Printers/Device Manager
2. Go to the Imaging Devices and Disable the webcam
3. Go to Control Panel/Program and find your webcam's DRIVER and uninstall the DRIVER, not the webcam.
4. Shut down your computer; wait 30 seconds and turn it back on. Login and go back to the Device Manager (see steps 1 and 2above) and then ENABLE the webcam.
This worked like a charm for me on my Fujitsu T5010 built-in webcam. I hope it works for you too.
