Got my Vaio SB today, however the Stamina/Speed switch does not work. Everytime i try to switch to stamina it tells me it cannot be done because i have application open. I tried to close all the applications and proccesses but it still does the same thing. Even shutting down the computer and restarting does the same thing. What can i do at this point? Is it a faulty laptop?

No it is not a faulty laptop. You have some program open which uses the graphics interface. Try task manager and kill all programs/processes running one at a time and try the switch again. Remember to use the "show all processes" mode because sometimes a process is hiding there. The program must be autostarted with windows if you have the problem even after a restart. So try them one at a time and you will find the source of the problem.

What's funny, is there is probably a Sony application that is blocking it, lol...

Also, Internet Explorer will block it, for no good reason, along with Windows Live messenger.

Not to be a troll, however, I liked nVidia's GPU switching better (talking about the preOptimus [I like Optimus, too]), since it would actually list which programs were blocking the switch.

That is ridiculous if you have to kill every program one at a time before you can do the switching. I thought it would be much simpler than that!

Also is there any program I can use to manually adjust the cpu frequency and voltage of the cpu. On my old computer, i used to use notebook hardware control, however that program is not supported in 64bit system.

Intel's on die power control system does a very good job of that already :)

It normally is just a simple switch. BUT first you have to find out which program is interfering with the switching. As soon as you know you just have to close that special program or don't start it at all before switching.

No there isn't with the current and last Core i series. Before that you could use rmclock and stuff like that but with current gen cpu you can't any more because Intel locked the programs out.

sigh. i tried to turn off all process and application and the switch still does not work. I really dont know what to do anymore. In speed mood, this laptop only last around 3 hours which is very disappointing.

So you shut down the computer, restarted it, and it's still stuck at speed mode with the pop up telling you to close your applications before graphics switching?

Unfortunately thats EXACTLY what it does. I shut down my computer complete,y and turn the switch to stamina, and the error message comes up saying that it cannot switch because i have to close my applications. I really dont know what to do anymore!

Did you do a clean install of Windows or did you use the preinstalled system? Maybe a clean install could help you.

I would love to do a clean install but i do not want to spend money on a window 7 premium CD key. Is it possible to use the cd key that came with the computer to do a clean install?

Yes it is! You don't have to pay for anything just enter the code from the bottom of your Laptop. You might have to activate it over phone though.

Did you install the AMD driver package over the original drivers? Coz the official AMD drivers don't work.

Try uninstalling all drivers then reinstalling the SB video drivers from Sony's support page. If it doesn't work still then call Sony.

After installing the Sony AMD drivers at least on my machine I could install the official AMD drivers without any problems... switch is still working.

which AMD official driver did u install? I tried 11.8 preview and it couldn't switch after installing it.

I tried the 11.7 mobility drivers and it said "this version of graphics adapter" not supported.

I had the same problem, but reinstaled drivers and.. This is what I finally got:

    5,9 in stamina mode.

But finally the switch works. Unfortunately I am unable to tell how I did it- i just repeatedly installed/rolled back drivers and restarted system.

I did a fresh install and the switch is working! Thank god! Stupid sony's bloatware was the culprit for the problem!

Sony's bloatware is on all its own computers and the switching works fine :) its obviously some other thing you screwed up in your computer that caused it not to work.
