Hey guys. I hope you can help me with a problem with my machine.
I just bought an external HDD - Seagate backup plus portable, 2.5inch, 1TB, single USB 3.0 cable connector.
Whenever I connect to one of my laptop's USB ports (tried both 3.0 and 2.0 port), my USB mouse stops working. It sporadically will react for a very brief moment to mouse moments, but soon will stay stationary again. The mousepad still works flawlessly, and as soon as is "eject" the external hdd in windows the mouse works again just fine.
My question: Is this a problem of power consumption? Unfortunately the data sheet of the hdd does not state anything about power consumption. Or maybe a driver incompatibility?
Further info:
Problem occurs irrespective of stamina/power mode. Problem occurs irrespective of windows powerplan setting "smart usb power management: enabled/disabled". Problem occurs at both the USB 3.0 port as well as an USB 2.0 port. If I connect the seagate ext. hdd to the usb 3.0 port and an additional usb 2.0 ext. hdd both power up flawlessly and are accessible by windows - should'nt a 2nd HDD have a much higher power consumption than my tiny usb-mouse receptor?
The Seagate disc also powers up and is accessible when connected to my Firtzbox 7320 router.
My setup: Sony Vaio SB1C5E, i5-2520 2.5GHz, 8gb ram, Win7 Pro 64bit SP1 installed, 89gb Kingston V100+ SSD, 500gb stock HDD in caddy.
Mouse: Logitech MX620 laser mouse, 2.4GHz USB receptor (pre-unifying model). Latest SetPoint Version (v 6.51.8), driver version v 5.50.98.
Ext. HDD: Seagate Backup Plus Portable 2.5inch, 1TB, USB 3.0
2nd ext HDD (working flawlessly): Intenso 2.5inch, 500gb, USB 2.0, connected via single usb cable.
If indeed it is a power problem: where can I find data on the maximum permissible consumption per port? Couldn't find anything in the documentation.
Thanks in advance for your advice. Sure appreciate it!!!
Greetings, Marc

This seems to be more of a USB controller problem than a power related issue. The controller might be so busy servicing the HDD that it doesn't have time to process the mouse data.

Solved. It is a general USB 3.0 problem. USB 3.0 interferes with wireless devices located in the direct environment. Using a more remote usb port solves the problem. See: Re: No mousefunction when ext. HDD plugged in - po... - Logitech Forums
