Hey Guys, I have a Sony Vaio SR190 with a 160gb@5400 rpm hard drive. I really want to upgrade this with more capacity. I have two main questions:

    1) What Hard Drive brand is the best? I was looking at the Western Digital Scorpio and the Seagate Momentus, but I want suggestions on the BEST.

    2) What speed should I go with? Will a 7200rpm not be a good choice for little SR? Should I stick with a 5400?

I really want the BEST choice for my laptop. If i'm going to get the best performance with a 7200 and not sacrifice heat/noise/battery consumption then that is what I will get. Thank you very much for your help.

    1) The "best" is subjective. Western Digital and Seagate are both good in my opinion.

    2) 7200rpm for sure to speed up your system.

I'm using the WD Scorpio (320gb flavor) and never regretted the move. The drive does not seem to put out more heat than the Fujitsu 5400 RPM drive that it replaced. Battery life does not seem to be negatively impacted either. There is a audible clicking sound (hard to hear unless my head is next to the palm rest), but it isn't anything that bothers me.

Take a look at Western Digital's Scorpio Blue and Scorpio Black models; the only difference between the two models is the 5400RPM and 7200RPM spindle speed, respectively. You may want to consider the Blue just for lower temps and cost, and because it performs almost as well as the black. Whether you want the premium option is your choice.
