    Hello everyone,

Im having a major issue with my SR290 and Sony Repair Center specifically.

Ok, I just noticed that my hard drive have been running constantly and never under an idle state about 3 weeks ago. I restored the computer twice but every time I turn it on, the hard drive and the fan makes really loud noises. Even when there are absolutely no applications running, the hard drive runs and makes obvious noises. I used to be sitting late at night surfing the internet and having absolutely no noise from the laptop, but now even when I just turn it on, its really loud. If I leave it on for over a few hours, the fan exhaust starts to expel really warm air.

So I had it sent to Sony repair and they said it was normal and they sent it back. So I sent it the 2nd time and they said again they compared my SR290 to other SR290s and they all make that running noise.

Now, for SR290 users, do your laptop makes running noise when it is idle and when you just turned it on? Or is it really really silent like how I thought it should be? Please help! Thanks a lot!

Mine's pretty much silent. I notice a little noise in a quiet room but it's almost nothing compared to my old Dell Inspiron 6000. when idle it makes no noise at all.

By restoring to factory defaults you may have changed your power saving profile. If that is the case set Vista to power-save mode.
If this is not sufficient, enable also the Silent Mode in Vaio Control Center. The fan should be silenced this way.

About the HD noise, I am not sure. Please provide more information about the kind of noise you hear. It may be that the OS is turning
the drive off frequently to save power, and what you hear is the drive spinning up again. Try setting Vista to never turn off the drive.
(Which brand of hard drive did your SR come with, btw?)

Sounds like you have to turn off indexing...
right click on the hard drive in my computer and then go to properties .. and uncheck the box for indexing..
    it should help

lol! This is is EXACTLY what your problem is my friend...in fact...indexing makes it seem like your fast new vista computer is going to explode. You have 2 choices...allow for indexing to do what it does for say...x days(dont know how many) and eventually it will idnexing the whole drive and stop OR do what 99.9% of us nerds do and "Optimize" Vista, which includes turning off indexing and disabling several useless services... pretty straight forward stuff. You can find out how to do this in the Winodws section of notebookreview and go to the tweaks and tips forum...first page. Only do what your comfortable doing, but i recommend turning off indexing.

After the tweaks were done my computer breezes, it runs faster than Mac OS X in my oppinion

I figured out that its not the hard drive nor the fan. But my laptop is still extremely loud even at start up. It makes loud humming noises (very similar to a spinning fan) but this noise comes from the upper right corner of the keyboard area (backspace area). The fan is located on the upper left corner.

So do you guys know what this noise is? I listened to some other SRs closely and I can hear this noise but it is extremely faint. Mine is really loud. What is it? Please help!
