I've had the original Vaio SZ 110 (not the premium edition) since it first came out at around late march 2006.

I just discovered a few days ago that the battery no longer seems to be detected, because as soon as I unplug the AC cord, the computer shuts off instead of switching to running on battery. This wasn't the case before until now. What's strange is that the battery isn't even detected under VAIO power management - power meter. Under battery #1 it says "Not present".

I made sure the battery is fully plugged in, and I tried taking it off then put it back in and lock it just to be sure. What is going on? It's been working fine until now, and why would it be completely dead all of the sudden? The battery lifespan should be longer than 8 months.

    Any ideas?

The battery might have been damaged.
The end of the lifespan of a laptop is signalled by very low battery life (e.g. 15mins) or like that. The battery does not stop being detected even at that time.

Have you been calibrating it regularly when it was working? That may be the cause of the problem.

Regardless, you might want to get in touch with Sony's support. I've heard from others that they've been able to get replacement batteries very quickly in similar situations. It should not be dead after 8 months.

In the future, do make sure to give your battery some proper care. Read through the battery guide for more information on the subject.

Thanks for the response, I thought it is weird to have the battery suddenly go undetected before deteriorating first. I haven't been doing anything irregular with the battery either. I haven't even bring my laptop around that much since I got it, and I have never dropped it or even hit something with it, so I don't think it can be due to any physical damage.

Regardless, I'll contact sony support, i hope i can get a replacement battery immediately by going to a sonystyle store.

Make sure to give your next battery the proper care and maintenance as outlined in the battery guide. That will help to keep your battery healthy and give it a longer life.

Join the crowd, or more like.. I just joined the crowd. =) I put my laptop into standby and when I turned it back on, the battery was dead/undetected. I bought mine in Feb/March time frame also.

Wow. This is ironic. My SZ 110 that I got last feb/march started doing this about a week ago. Battery is completely not seen by computer, no matter how many times I reboot/reseat battery. I'm on vacation and will try to get them to replace battery when I get back.
