Ok I emailed the sony website to find out what the big difference was and he said that one of the main differences was the type of casing.

He said that the SZ240 has the Black Magnesium casing and the SZ140 has the Charcoal Carbon casing.

My question is which of the two is a better type of casing in terms of aesthetics and durability? Thanks for any responses.

Not sure who exactly wrote the answer back for your email but I think they got it wrong.

The SZ140 has a magnesium case, its listed on the Sony website in their learning center section. I'm assuming the SZ240 also has a magnesium case because the SZ2xx series is just a refresh of the SZ1xx series, just with bigger HD and possibly the WAN card. So if the SZ160 has a carbon case, the SZ260 would as well, since they are the premium line.

Here's link to Sony's learning center site, it does not have the full specs of the SZ2xx series yet.

However if you look at this link, which lists the features of the casing half way down, you'll notice it lists the case types. SZ240 having magnesium and only the SZ250, 260, 270 and 280 having Carbon Fiber.

Is it possible they said it was carbon black color?

Nope the section that I wrote about the type of casing was completely cut and pasted from the email.

    Thanks for the links though!

I was just trying to find out the difference myself - strange they have so many similarities and are about the same price - not sure why they would produce two different models.

Strange to me that Sony would come up with a new model designation for just a larger hard drive. I guess thats just the Sony way but I'm not used to it.

The only difference is the bigger hard drive on the SZ240. Both are non-premium models with a magnesium lid.

This SZ 240 has an antenna on the right side. I saw a display model at Best Buy the other day.

Antenna is probably for EDGE (Cingular) then, the WAN capability that the newer series has. Its nice but also expensive, I believe rates start at $20-$50 for rated access and $60-$80 for unlimited use.

those wireless WAN cards are a rippoff to me. Buy a bluetooth capable cellphone and get t-zones from t-mobile. 4.99 a month for unlimited wireless internet wherever you get GPRS coverage.
