So I just purchased my sz 650 laptop this last December 2007. Up until very recently, and even after I did the semi-clean install, my dvd drive was working. Just today, I realized that it is not showing up at all under my computers, and it is not reading any media that I place in there. The physical dvd looks like it is a little mis-aligned and not flush to my laptop, though I did remember this was the case from the date of purchase.... but maybe now it is a little worse than before.

Anyone have any ideas how to even begin diagnosing the problem?

Any ideas would be tremendously appreciated.... I am really in a jamb.

    Thank you,
    Vivian

This was discussed 100's times of before. Use the search box at the top. Solution is to remove the appropriate registry entires of the drive filters.

i tried that even by totally uninstalling any software that uses the cd/dvd player first, and then deleting the registry files, but still it is not working. In "my computer" i don't even see it, but when i put in a cd or dvd i can hear it humming and a yellow light blinking, but it doesn't activate the drive....

can any of you think of anything else? i search much much more thoroughly through the past threads now and I haven't found anything else except that maybe i have a dirty player?

Weiviv, try pushing the drive in. We had a similar problem with one of our SZs. It turns out that the drive popped loose.

itworker - that did it. Thank you so much for your help - I even ended up calling Sony Support, and they didn't help - but you did. I did what you said, then uninstalled and reinstalled the driver, and now my computer is as good as before.

    Thanks a million!
