Can someone please help solve this problem. I know that this issue has been raised before - I just want a final solution to this. I get these random connect/disconnect sounds. I think it might be the fingerprint reader. How come?

    thankyou

well I thought it was the bluetooth stack from talks on this forum. I was having issues with mine crashing my desktop ever since I got my laptop. I uninstalled it and that helped but I still get that noise. sounds like a USB device connecting and dropping off. hope that helps.

I'd go for the WWAN module...
I think it will be very difficult to determine unless you switch on/off erverty device and run the computer for a considerable amount of time.

Nowadays nearly everything runs on a form of USB, even internal connections I believe..

I've had this problem with XP and also Vista. I'm sure it is the fingerprint reader. I don't have a WWAN card because the laptops in Australia dont have them. They only have the WLAN. I have gone to the device manager and under the setting of the fingerprint reader I have unselected the "allow this device to turn of for power saving" (wording was close enough). I'm not sure if that will work. My computer has had full recovery a number of times using the restore discs and also full clean install of xp professional.

it is the fingerprint reader I happen to see it drop out of my taskbar when the sound fired off.
