Hey there!
The webcam from my SZ2HP stopped working, apparently due to some driver problem, as it returns: "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)".
Tried to install the driver again [both from the Driver backup I already had in my pc and also the Original Drivers zip file I found in Vaio UK webpage (which also includes an hotfix KB909667 that won't run, as "Setup has detected that the Service Pack version of this system is newer that the update you are applying. There is no need to install this update.")] but it keeps not working. And when I say not working I mean it won't even appear on My Computer (not really installed, as device manager shows a yellow (!) on top of the camera).
Meanwhile I installed DriverMax (do anyone uses it?) which finds all my drivers to be working properly, except the Sony Visual Communication Camera VGP-VCC2 one, as it found a -1 (yes, minus 1) number of driver files (check printscreen, with the report files on the right). It also returned an error log that I present here (check attachments) hoping anyone can make sense of it and give some suggestion on how to proceed.
I'm running XP Business and I suspect the camera problem came with SP3 (not sure, don't use the camera that much - until now, that I really need it). Someone has a clue?
Thank you!

Anyone, please?

If I remember correctly the error is down to the the version of the camera util and not the driver.
When I owned a SZ2 I compiled a set of drivers and utils which worked nicely together, these can be found in my "SZ - Make your own Vista ISO with integrated drivers" thread.
Oops, just read you're running XP, you could give the utils a try and see if they work. -
Installed the utils you suggested (I was missing the Camera Capture one!) but no good. The Camera Capture works just fine, apart from detecting no camera input whatsoever. So, if the utils can't seem to find the camera, I believe we're down to a driver issue.
Can you/anyone locate every file of the Sony Visual Communication Camera VGP-VCC2 driver, so that I can remove then manually and perform a clean install? -
Raul,
If you open the drivers folder there are only two or three files in there. You can use those to search for your existing one.
How can the capture work when the camera isn't detected? -
Sorry, I meant solely that the software runs correctly, though of course it doesn't detect a camera to capture from, so it's of absolutely no use...
In my drivers backup folder I have 6 files:
- INFCACHE.1
- mvc25u870.cat
- Mvc25U870.inf
- Mvc25U870.PNF
- Mvc25U870.sys
- Mv25U870Prp.ax
Performing a search in the WINDOWS folder after "updating" the driver, I can find:
- INFCACHE.1 under C:\WINDOWS\inf
- No copies of mvc25u870.cat
- Mvc25U870.inf under C:\WINDOWS\system32
- No copies of Mvc25U870.PNF
- Mvc25U870.sys under C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers
- Mv25U870Prp.ax under C:\WINDOWS\system32
But, during the supposed updating of the driver, I can see that many dll and ax files (namely vidcap.ax) are being installed, but I can't access no report to know exactly which files are concerned in the process. Perhaps there's some problem with one of them?
