Yes you can use your laptop's screen while hooking it up to an external VGA monitor = dual screen. If you use the dock, then you can choose to use a DVI connection instead.

i was thinking more like 2 external monitors as the scren will be closed most of te time. Do i need some special graphics card add on or can i do it straight up?

The laptop itself has one video output. The docking station has one output. I have not tried to see if you can run both. I currently run my SZ with a 27" (1900 x 1200) monitor which in some ways i prefer to my two monitor setup at home (two 17" monitors) you might consider one ginormous monitor instead of two.... :D

    ^^ So VGA/DVI on docking station = 2x external monitor? :)

What about the notebook screen or the D-SUB on the notebook itself while using the two ports on the docking station?

It's no problem to use 2 monitors on the SZ docking station, but you have to use NV7400 video card. Intel video card doesn't support dvi.

It's no way to use 2 external monitors and your laptop display at this same time. Nvidia and Intel video card are dual view cards only.
The VGA/D-Sub connector on laptop itself is mechanically "blocked" and doesn't work at all.

If you would like to use 2 external monitors and your laptop display at this same time, buy Matrox DualHead2Go Digital Edition.

    hey guys

I am hoping you all can assist me as you seem to be using the sz48 the way I would like to. I provide corporate IT support to companies and have just received about 10 sz48's with vista bus, docking station, 20" tft's for their kit.

Problem I have is that when I boot up the pc in the docking station (by open lid, power on, close lid (I set the close lid to "do nothing" as have done with previous sony's on XP)) the display will not come up on the external monitor until after the user logs in, then it comes up in low res so the user has to change res every time.

I called sony and they said they were awaiting new drivers from nvidia and we just had to wait.

Do you guys experience the same issue?

Basically the users have to dock, open lid, power up, close lid (or wait until it boots), log in on the laptop, then go into nvidia control panel, then set to use the external display, then go into personalize and set the res to 1600x1200. Quite a pain and on previous models with the intel drivers I just set a TFT profile so when they docked it instantly came up on the external, and then they just had to click to select the TFT profile and everything was fine.

This is kind of annoying for the users.

    Cheers,
    AD
